Recharge those batteries

Have a good festive break and stay safe from whichever Covid variant is near you. Recharge those batteries because we are going to need your help defeating the 18 pages of draconian laws that the government submitted as late amendments to the Police and Crime Bill.

Your Green Party peers spotted that the government's attempt to evade democratic scrutiny by MPs by tabling the late amendments has actually given the Lords the power to reject the new amendments outright. They would give the police the power to restrain people from attending protests if they have taken part in previous protests,  they target "locking-on" and other forms of nonviolent protest with prison sentences, as well as giving police officers the ability to stop and search without suspicion.

The Lords have a rare opportunity to defend civil liberties by voting down these amendments, but we need the Labour Party to act like an opposition. Please lobby @UKLabour, the national Labour Party, and Keir Starmer, to reject all of the attacks on freedom contained in the Police Bill. Please also lobby your *Labour* MPs to vote with us against these government amendments so the Labour leadership will rally their members of the House of Lords against these measures.

Defending freedoms

Both of your Green Party peers have been busy defending freedom of speech and freedom of lifestyle.

Natalie forced to a vote a Lords' amendment to completely delete the government's attack on traveller rights, but it fell when Labour abstained. This bit of the Police Bill is often over looked but could lead to the destruction of the Roma and Gypsy way of life. As Natalie said, blowing a dog whistle calls a pack together.

Jenny's contribution to a debate on freedom of speech focused on the government's repressive measures and the Police Bill.

Corruption

Jenny wrote to the Independent Office of Police Complaints about their failure to investigate last year's christmas party at Downing Street.

She wrote about how this failure was part of a pattern of failure to examine the actions of Ministers, such as the Covid contracts and cash for peerages.

She also called for this corrupt government to go in an ITV interview.

All good wishes from your Green Peers for a happy, healthy and very successful Green 2022!

Also coming up - Health and the Nationality and Borders Bill

While the government is attacking our civil liberties, it is also threatening our NHS, with the Health and Care Bill that threatens to break it up as an institution and leave it open to further privatisation, while also rationing care.Natalie will be leading our attempts to amend the bill.

AND the Nationality and Border Bill, which threatens to break international law by denying the right to permanent asylum for refugees arriving on these shores, and leaves 6 million Britons with the threat of Priti Patel being able to take away their citizenship.
