We’ll also share a wonderful employment opportunity for our Ōtautahi-based whānau and give you some links to scholarships on offer next year for our rangatahi.

A reminder, our Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust office is now closed, we will re-open for the New Year on Monday 10th January 2022.

Meri Kirihimete to you all. Wishing you all a safe, sunny holiday period.

COVID-19 Booster Vaccinations

Boosters will be available in the New Year for all whānau FOUR months after the date of their second vaccine.

With COVID-19 now spreading around the motu, it’s important that we do our best to be prepared for the arrival of the virus on the island. Many of our population are now eligible for the booster vaccine, and we want to ensure as many whānau as possible are able to access this before the winter.

Why have the Booster?

We know that the free COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to protect against this virus. Research has shown that from 6 months after your second shot, the protection provided by the vaccines starts to weaken.

Whānau that receive the booster six months after their regular shots, have been proven to have increased protection – data shows as much as 95.6 percent protection against COVID-19 including the Delta variant.

The Government have been advised that it is safe to shorten the time between vaccine and booster to 4 months from 3rd January to help stop the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

How do I get the Booster?

The COVID-19 Booster will be available from early in the New Year at the Chatham Islands Health Centre.

To book vaccinations or a Booster, please contact the centre reception on 03 305 0035.

If you have any questions about the COVID-19 vaccinations or the Booster, please visit the Unite Against COVID website, Ministry of Health website,  Karawhiua channels, or the Te Puni Kōkiri ‘COVID-19 Information for Māori’ portal.

Vaccines for Tamariki

Now that Medsafe have given provisional approval for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5-11, the New Zealand government has decided to roll-out this vaccine to protect our tamariki.

The tamariki version of the vaccine requires two shots, three weeks apart and studies overseas show a similar level of protection against the virus to adults and rangatahi.

The vaccine rollout will start on the 17th of January. We will let whānau know when it will be available on the island.

Once our tamariki are back at kura after the summer, the spread of COVID-19 is likely to increase. Preventing infection in our young people means they are less likely to pass this virus on to our vulnerable kaumatua.

More information about the vaccine for tamariki, the vaccine for adults and rangatahi and the Booster vaccine can be found at the Unite Against COVID website, or you can contact the health professionals in our rohe at the Chatham Islands Health Centre – 03 305 0035.

Tāmaki Makaurau Seafood Packages

There’s no doubt our Tāmaki Makaurau whānau have been doing it tough with this last lockdown.  They have been in a level 3 and 4 lockdown for over 100 days – a long time to not be able to go about the normal activities we all take for granted.

As an Iwi we wanted to tautoko our whānau locked down in Tāmaki Makaurau, some who had experienced real hardships including illness and the loss of loved ones.  In collaboration with John and Bridget Preece, Janaya Preece, Waitangi Seafoods, Air Chathams and Moana New Zealand, the Iwi Trust provided a seafood package ‘care pack’ for Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri whānau locked down in Tāmaki Makaurau.

We have been humbled at the feedback we received.  A picture speaks a thousand words and as the photo show, it was gratefully received.

Kia kaha e te whanau.
