Good news for all you Seattle cinema buffs — there’s a new action film coming out that was shot in Seattle’s own streets! KIMI is about a voice stream interpreter (played by Zoë Kravitz) who overhears a murder while she is analyzing tape. The film’s title is named for the Alexa/Siri-like voice-activated digital assistant that Kravitz uses to complete her tasks. In the trailer alone you’ll see a map of Seattle street names, an aerial shot near Westlake Center, and a snippet of the Expedia campus in Interbay. Spot anything else we missed? We can’t wait to see what other local landmarks will be on display when the film is released on HBO Max on Feb. 10. (📸: @merrillimages) 🚲 The Seattle outdoor retailer Evo recently purchased an entire block of land in Fremont. Evo founder Bryce Phillips, Evolution Projects and a partner will have control over the whole block as they make way for their “Campus Seattle” project, which will combine office buildings with retail, restaurants and sport facilities. Evo operates nine stores across the country and has recently expanded their business with large-scale projects in Whistler Village and Salt Lake City. Phillips says the project will begin once the space is occupied by the “right” tenant. It’s unclear who that perfect tenant could be, but it’s worth mentioning the neighborhood has grown increasingly tech-heavy with the offices of Google, Tableau and others nearby. (Seattle Met) ✉️ Abortion pills are permanently available by mail after the FDA permanently lifted a dispensing requirement for a medication commonly used in some abortion practices last month. In Washington, providers have been prescribing abortion pills via mail since the requirement was first lifted. Abortion access varies widely, and the South Seattle Emerald covers how we compare to other areas of the country and how the new availability of abortion pills impacts our region. 👉 (South Seattle Emerald) ⛴️ Washington State Ferries have struggled with staffing for over a decade, and ferry-goers have started to notice. Crew shortages cancelled 341 runs in the first half of October alone, affecting riders’ abilities to commute, get to medical treatments, or access groceries. There are several reasons why it’s hard to both retain and recruit employees, but most recently, many ferry employees have quit, retired or been fired for COVID-related reasons— 139 employees in total. Since 1999, the state’s ferry system has lacked sufficient funding, but Gov. Jay Inslee is proposing a 26 percent increase for Washington State Ferries in the budget for 2021-2023.
