A Word From Jane

Hi Everyone, It is hard to believe we are already in Week 3! We are delighted to share our first library newsletter of the term. We are planning more and hope you will find them informative and fun. This past Fall, we were happy to introduce over one hundred of the incoming students to the library, each with a 20-30 minute individualized orientation as part of the Core course. If anyone else out there would like a brief overview or review of the library’s offerings, please feel free to contact us at library@coa.edu. Right now we are planning events for the rest of the term, including a presentation by Frances Miller ’24 about lesbian history on MDI, a movie night, a zine event, music in the library, and, of course, Pi(e) Night. Join Us: Mount Desert Island Lesbian History Night

Frances Miller is a second year student at COA. During her Fall term, she completed an independent study concerning various lesbian couples who have historically inhabited Mount Desert Island. In this presentation she will tell the stories of these couples.

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

Have you ever wondered what life might be like for humans thousands of years in the future? The Afrofuturist science fiction novel Binti by Nnedi Okorafor has one answer to this question. This first book in this trilogy introduces us to our main character, Binti, as she struggles to survive the journey to her new university and the ship she is traveling on is invaded by murderous Meduse aliens.

Shirley Jackson: Novels and Stories

It was hard to choose just one work by Shirley Jackson that I like best, so why not read them all in Shirley Jackson: Novels and Stories. Her ability to mess with the reader’s perspective by withholding details and twisting situations is incredible. If you want to read about how monstrous people can be - a theme in her work - check this out.

Thorndike has a huge digital collection for you to explore. cloudLibrary is one of our least known resources but it has great eBooks and audio-books that you can check out for free! From Beowulf to Go Set A Watchman, if you are looking for a new read you should check out cloudLibrary.
