ANNOUNCEMENTS

Resources, support for NIH S10 proposals

NIH S10 Instrumentation Grants support purchases of state-of-the-art commercially available instruments to enhance research of NIH–funded investigators. U-M researchers are eligible for two S10 mechanisms: Shared Instrumentation Grants (SIG; PAR-22-080), for instruments $50K-$600K, and High-End Instrumentation (HEI; PAR-22-079), for instruments between $600,001 and $2 million.

While this opportunity is not limited, NIH does not allow multiple requests for similar instruments. Investigators must declare Intent to Submit to OVPR by March 28; OVPR will coordinate proposals for similar equipment.

U-M Research Development and Proposal Services provides an NIH S10 Toolkit that includes sample proposals, a summary of common reviewer critiques, and a recent workshop recording with slides. We can arrange peer review for teams that want feedback prior to submission; full proposal drafts are due to OVPR April 25 to receive comments.

Webinar to discuss challenges in diversifying the research workforce

Recruitment and retention of underrepresented persons in science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM) research fields is a high priority for U-M. However, achieving our commitment to DEI is often seen as challenging for training program directors given the State of Michigan’s passage of Proposition 2 (aka Prop 2), which prevents using race, ethnicity, sex and national origin to grant preferences in public education, public employment and public contracting.

Sponsored by MICHR and OHEI, an upcoming webinar, "Myth Busting Prop 2: Challenges & Opportunities in Diversifying the Research Workforce," will discuss best practices for effectively recruiting and retaining a diverse group of scholars. The event will be held February 8 at 2 pm.

All faculty, staff, postdocs, and students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Webinar to teach strategies for finding funding

Hosted by U-M Research Development and Proposal Services, library experts Judy Smith and Paul Barrow will present Finding Funding: Identifying Opportunities & Scoping the Grants Landscape, a webinar on March 8, noon-1 pm. This workshop will help investigators at all levels use tools to be proactive in identifying federal, state, and foundation research funding. Topics will include efficient searches of funding databases and setting up funding alerts via Foundation Directory Online and PIVOT. The workshop also will direct researchers to units at U-M that will support their grantseeking endeavors.

This event is open to anyone in the U-M research community.

Improve mentoring skills with MICHR's Mentoring Academy

Do you want to develop and hone your mentoring skills? Do you have a mentor training requirement you need to fulfill? The 2022 MICHR Mentoring Academy curriculum is based on the widely used Mentor Training for Clinical and Translational Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) and satisfies the new NIGMS guidelines regarding the preparation of mentors involved in training grants

Participants will learn how to better coach and counsel other less-experienced mentors, as well as enhance interpersonal skills for mutually beneficial mentor-mentee interactions. Participants also will address challenges facing faculty mentors via case studies, group discussions and role-play.

Session topics are: Maintaining Effective Communication, Aligning Expectations, Addressing Equity and Inclusion, Fostering Independence, and Promoting Professional Development.

The program kicks off Tuesday, February 1.

ORSP resources for updating biosketches & Other Support

For applications submitted to NIH on or after January 25, 2022 (FORMS-G), the agency has issued new requirements for Other Support reporting and biographical sketches. The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) offers guidance and templates to clarify the changes to biosketches and Other Support reporting.

When submitting your next NIH proposal, keep in mind that it may require additional time to update these documents to make them compliant with new standards. Work with research administrators on updates, or send questions to Other-Support-Reporting@umich.edu
