10 years ago at Spectrum

On 11 January 2012, Spectrum reported on results showing that autistic girls tend to carry more autism-linked mutations than autistic boys do. Two years ago, researchers plumbed a large dataset to calculate that autistic women average 22 gene variants to autistic men’s 18. Both sets of findings support the idea of a ‘female protective effect,’ in which it takes more genetic ‘hits’ in women than in men to result in autism.
