The City Honors Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Day of Service


Tuesday, January 11, 2022 -- The City of Falls Church commemorates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by declaring Monday, January 17, 2022, as a Day of Service and supporting and promoting civic engagement across The Little City.

The City Council proclamation reads, "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?' Each year, on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together to serve their neighbors and communities."

Tinner Hill Foundation Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day March
Meet at 11 a.m. at the Tinner Hill Civil Rights Monument (S. Washington St. at Tinner Hill Rd) for sign making and family activities. U.S. Senator Mark Warner will give remarks at 11:30 a.m. The march starts at noon. And end at the Falls Church (115 E. Fairfax St.) for a program. Road Closures on S Washington St. for March
The City of Falls Church Police advise drivers to expect rolling road closures along S Washington St. (Route 29/Lee Highway) for a Martin Luther King Day, Jr. March on Monday, January 17 from about Noon to 1:00 p.m. Police expect the northbound lanes (towards Arlington County) and southbound lanes (towards Fairfax County) of S Washington St. will need to be closed at various intervals along these intersections:
  • S Washington St. and Tinner Hill Rd.
  • S Washington St. and Hillwood Ave.
  • S Washington St. and Annandale Rd.
  • S Washington St. and E Fairfax St.

City Government Holiday Closures
The following City Government offices, programs, or services will be closed or rescheduled in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 17, 2022:
  • CLOSED: City Hall and most government offices and services including the Mary Riley Styles Public Library
  • OPEN: Community Center, open 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
