Project Protech PACER Training Update
Many of us are at increased risk of mental health problems, and front-line workers are also struggling in their efforts to respond. PACER Training is here to help. We have just completed or in the final weeks of three cohorts: one Cantonese (14C) and two English (15E and 16E);     We are currently planning on new PACER Training Cohorts starting in February. Curated Articles: Omicron and living with COVID: Why the new variant might change the timeline
The Omicron variant is causing the virus to spread fast, and experts say that could speed up the timeline for COVID-19 to shift from a major health crisis to something we live with on a regular basis. The concept is known as "endemicity", and it refers to a time when a circulating virus no longer has the steep waves of outbreaks that hammer hospital capacity and force society to adapt, according to doctors. Instead, an endemic virus continues to circulate through our population — but in a way we can handle, like the flu. Finish your reading here

Curated Articles: What are the long-term effects of COVID-19 on mental health?
In a recent multinational study, researchers determine the long-term adverse mental health symptoms associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by estimating acute infection severity. What are the long-term effects of COVID-19 on mental health? Have their answer here

Curated Articles: How do we treat the unvaccinated? CMA opens dialogue as health systems overwhelmed
"We have this small minority — about five to 10% of the population — that are leading us to where we are right now, and I think we need to get serious about what we're going to do about that," said Canadian Medical Association President Dr. Katherine Smart. Read the full article here

Curated Articles:
For the English version, please click here

Curated Articles: From treatment to mental health toll, studies reveal women are disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic
Two separate studies are revealing the toll the pandemic is having on women’s health including a treatment for COVID-19 that may only benefit men. The University of Calgary study stated that treatment steroids may help male patients they have little to no benefit for females. Access the full article here

Curated Articles: The Wisdom of Resilience
What can older adults teach us about supporting mental wellbeing? Senior citizens sit at the center of life’s oldest paradox. For many, the closer they come to death, the more their emotional well-being seems to increase. After a lifetime of losing loved ones, suffering defeats, and experiencing physical decline, older adults still manage to take life's punches in stride. Finish reading this resilience piece here

Curated Articles: We're in the 'you're on your own' stage of the pandemic
"Welcome to the create-your-own-adventure stage of the pandemic, where your individual experience will be determined by some combination of geography, financial resources, intuition and dumb luck. There is no guidebook, no consensus, no procedure to follow on this Day Eleventy-Billion of Canada's war against COVID-19." Robyn Urback opined at the Globe.   Read the article  here

Curated Articles: Vaccination trend for Ontario kids 5-11 'alarming'
Almost seven weeks after appointments opened, just 45% of kids 5-11 had received at least one dose, as the date for in-person learning nears. COVID-19 vaccine doses administered to the kids aged five to 11 in Ontario have dropped off significantly over the last three weeks, a sign that the province is facing an uphill battle to vaccinate even a majority of children in this age cohort before school returns to in-person learning. Curated Articles: Expert Q&A on anti-Asian racism during the pandemic
Since the start of the global lockdown, hate crimes targeted at Asian Canadians have increased hundreds of times over what they were before the pandemic began. New research led by University of Victoria psychologist Nigel Mantou Lou shows alarming rates of discriminatory experiences faced by Chinese Canadians and other Asian Canadians. Curated Articles: Canadians with disabilities fell through the cracks in the pandemic response. Here's what needs to change as Omicron surges
One in five Canadians live with disabilities — a number likely to grow as the pandemic presses on. Advocates share how leaders should plan ahead. As the COVID-19 case count in Canada surges due to the Omicron variant, the number of people dealing with long-term symptoms — an expansive list that can include brain fog, fatigue, muscle aches — will grow. Palliative care physician Dr. Amit Arya sees this easily snowballing to be a “mass disabling event.” Get more information here

Community Story: 20 people who took on the biggest job of the pandemic and helped Ontario get its shots
The goal was daunting, seemingly unattainable: Vaccinate 90% of Ontario’s population — more than 13 million people — against COVID-19. Double doses would help protect our family and neighbours, lower our own risk of getting sick and push us past the pandemic that has upended daily life and led to the deaths of more than 10,000 people in the province. Community Story: 'I can't even explain to you how hard it is to get up and go to work': Nurses face Omicron, a worker shortage — and shifting rules
Nancy Halupa was seated with her co-workers at 3 a.m., nearly eight hours into her 12-hour shift, when a colleague looked at them and said what many were feeling: that they had never seen such a "defeated group of nurses." "I was like, 'Yeah, we're done,'" Halupa says. A registered nurse who works in an emergency department in Toronto, Halupa said she’s never felt so demoralized in her 23-year career. Community Story: Kids growing up in the pandemic have a different view of the world
I recently enrolled my two eldest daughters in swimming lessons, after a nearly two-year pandemic-related hiatus. Their lessons are held in a state-of-the-art recreation centre in Guelph, Ont. After school one day, I brought my youngest daughter, who is 4, to watch her sisters from the viewing deck. While we walked through the echoey hallway, the smell of chlorine burning our nostrils, I peered down at my wide-eyed kindergartener and wondered what she was thinking.
