Happy New Year Friends and Colleagues,

As we continue to be nudged toward resilience and innovation by the various challenges life brings, I’m wishing all of you an abundance of love, curiosity, and gratitude.

Concerning Change

Change is a frequent focus in our relationships and as individuals. Sometimes we want changes that are hard to achieve. Other times we must deal with unwanted changes. In a recent New York Times article, “Watching a Partner Change Is Hard. Accepting It Can Be Harder.” Allison Hope talks about some of the common changes that couples go through, over the course of a relationship, as well as the uncommon changes that couples have had to deal with during the pandemic.

You may also be interested in my article in MindBodyGreen, “Can People Really Change? A Couples' Therapist Debunks A Big Relationship Myth.” The answer, of course, is “yes.” The kinds of positive changes that we want involve learning. And neuroscience tells us that our brains are perfectly designed for learning throughout our lifetimes. The real question is, “Under what conditions do people change?”

Concerning Listening

Listening fully will help you to have more of those amazing moments that can happen when two people connect with open hearts and open minds. Yes, this describes good sex, and it’s also possible in conversation when you learn how to really listen. You can read more in my latest Psychology Today blog post.
