Kyoto JALT’s  2021 ‘Year in Review’, by Gretchen Clark, President

Happy 2022 Kyoto JALT members! Here’s an update on the status of our chapter as of January 2021. Read on for more details:

⭐ Our membership is steady at 133.  Thank you to Ben Thanyawatpokin, our former Membership Chair for his work welcoming new members and helping out with the behind the scenes planning for our January 2021 event. We already miss his sparkle....however former Prez, Thomas Amundrud offered to step up into this role and in addition, continue to advise the rest of the committee on anything and everything connected to JALT. He knows all the things! As the new (novice!) president, I'm so thankful he's continuing as a member of the team.

⭐We held 7 main chapter events on topics ranging from pandemic teaching, bringing MUN to the classroom, best practices concerning advising, and important discussions on race and native speakerism. Thank you to Chelanna White Programming Co-chair for her tireless support, and new ideas..always keeping KJ fresh!  And thank you to Betsy Lavolette and Christina Coslian for helping out planning events in the summer months.

⭐We also held 10 meetings of the Social Justice + Language Teaching Working Group. Thank you again to Betsy Lavolette for her enthusiasm and leadership… and a huge welcome to Michael Ellis, our interim chair.

⭐ Yoshimi Ochiai, Donny Sparrow, John Syquia flooded inboxes and social media with our chapter news and kept us all informed about all of the chapter activities. A huge thank you to them. We welcomed Edward Luis Escobar as our new webwaster and are thrilled with the new vibe of the website. Head over and take a look! https://kyotojalt.org

⭐ Another thank you to Martin Hawkes for handling all the nitty-gritty involving our chapter finances. We have been prudent, but we feel the chapter money has been spent in a worthwhile manner. We were able to bring several speakers to our events such  as the amazing, Ryuko Kubota. We also sponsored two non-JALT events, one planned by SIETAR as well as the Living on the Edge 2021 conference.

⭐ Thank you to Members at Large Bjorn Fuisting and Ann Shearer Flanagan for supporting the chapter by coming to events and offering advice and alternative perspectives, helping shape the chapter into a small, yet mighty force with the larger JALT.

⭐ Finally, thank you to our membership for your participation at our events in 2021. Maintaining a friendly chapter community on Zoom has not been easy, however I think we have connected in the best way we can during this remote professional development period. It was amazing to see so many faces, old and new in the Zoom meetings. Due to complications with the spread of COVID, we will hold our January event on Zoom but have our sights set on having our March event at Campus Plaza. We hope many of you come out to say hello in person.

Warm wishes for another year of impactful professional development!

On behalf of the committee, Gretchen Clark, President

Call for Posters

On March 13, JALT Kyoto is holding a Publishers' Fair at Campus Plaza in Kyoto. We are looking to support small, local, and independent ELT publishers and materials creators in the Kansai area.

The event is modeled on the national conference’s Educational Materials Exhibition. Many publishers and materials creators will be simultaneously giving poster-style presentations and discussing their work with attendees. If you have any promotional items to give out, it would be a big draw to your poster!

There are two portions to the event. The morning will consist of workshops, followed by a lunch break. Presenters and attendees are welcome to eat together at the Campus Plaza, or enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area. After lunch, the poster sessions will begin.

Please submit your proposal to kyoto@jalt.org by Sunday, February 13th.

Kind regards,

Richard Sparrow

Using Tasks in Language Teaching in Japan - Natsuko Shintani, Ph.D. (in-person)

Nagoya

Saturday, January 29, 2022 - 2:00pm to 4:30pm

Abstract

Despite the strong theoretical support for task-based language teaching (TBLT), there are issues relating to how this approach can be implementing in English-as-a-foreign language contexts such as Japan. In may talk I will consider how tasks can be incorporated into language instruction in Japan. I will first illustrate how tasks differ from exercises by introducing the notion of task-supported and task-based language teaching. Then I will introduce an example of how to implement tasks in language classrooms using input-based tasks for young, beginner-level learners. I will then demonstrate how tasks can be designed to cater to different age groups or different levels of proficiency. Finally, I will point out the benefits introducing TBLT into English classrooms in Japan.

Bio

Natsuko Shintani is a Professor in the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies, Kansai University. Her research interests include the interface between second language instruction and second language acquisition, with particular emphasis on task-based language teaching, second language writing, and the role of individual differences. Her work has appeared in journals such as Language Learning, TESOL Quarterly, and Studies in Second Language Acquisition. Her current research focuses on the role of instruction in developing L2 pragmatic knowledge.

For safety measures, we are going to try and limit attendees to 30 people, so please register in advance if you would like to attend.

Teaching Entrepreneurship Through Experiential Learning

Fukuoka

Event Speaker(s): Steve Quasha, Daniel Mills

Saturday, January 29, 2022 - 6:00pm

The rate of women entrepreneurs in Japan is abysmally low compared to other nations. In fact, Japan ranks last among OECD countries, and data indicates that a mere 170f Japanese women declared to have knowledge about starting or growing their own business. The current situation indicates the need for learning materials that not only introduce the topic of entrepreneurship to all students but also showcase female models of business success. To this end, the presenters have created a series of experiential learning materials centered around a strong female character, Mirai Takahashi, who is in the process of launching a business start-up with the guidance of her mentor, Catherine Sakamoto. Through Takahashi's successes and failures, students experience the risks and rewards of starting their own company.

This workshop will showcase how to utilize these materials and demonstrate how perceptions of entrepreneurship, gender equality, and digital transformation in business are crucial for students. The presenters will describe their current efforts to gather both quantitative and qualitative data for these studies and share their initial results.

Steven E. Quasha is an associate professor in the Faculty of Modern Management at Sugiyama Jogakuen University in Nagoya. He holds an MA in Asian Studies from San Diego State University and an MA in TESOL from Macquarie University. He also has a teacher trainer certificate from the School for International Training (SIT). His research interests include language assessment, business English, and using technology in the classroom.

Daniel J. Mills is an associate professor at Ritsumeikan University in the Faculty of Economics and holds an MS.Ed. in TESOL from Shenandoah University along with an Ed.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Wyoming. His research interests include Informal Learning with Technology, Mobile Learning, and Technology Adoption.

The Zoom details will be available on fukuokajalt.org on the day of the event. We will start the Zoom an hour early (5 PM) for an hour of informal discussion and networking.

Outgoing Chair, Supporting Students with Disabilities Interest Section, TESOL International

“You are being invited to participate in research in completion of a PhD dissertation at the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda University. The research is focused on English language teachers’ orientation towards inclusive education for students with disabilities using the Japanese postsecondary context as a case. As such, please only complete the survey if you currently teach (part- or full-time) in such a context. The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will help fill a critical research gap, as little is currently known about English language teachers’ preparedness to teach students with disabilities. Please note that participation is completely voluntary and anonymous, and that your consent will be indicated by submitting a completed response. Finally, you are encouraged to forward this message and link to your colleagues. Thank you in advance for your participation!
