From the Headmaster

Dear Parents

I hope that you have happy memories of and enjoyable time with your families over Christmas and that your children have returned to school happily. I asked the children at Good Work Assembly last week: ‘Who is pleased to be back at school?’ and every hand seemed to shoot straight up. If I had regrets about the holiday being over, that response served to dispel that thought quickly.

One of the many seasonal pleasures in January is the chance to sit with some of the older children for a practice interview ahead of a senior school assessment. Amongst other things, I’m always keen to know which stories they have picked up from the news and, at the moment, the exploits of the Westminster government or the world’s number 1 tennis player seem first to be mentioned. Some of the children comment – in line with most media sources - on the consequences of breaking the rules while others focus on the importance of telling the truth. And I wonder if the latter point isn’t the most important?

Either way, it is always easier to do the right thing when you know you are being observed. C.S. Lewis is supposed to have said that integrity is ‘doing the right thing even when no-one is looking’. Do we follow the rules because we believe in them or because we are frightened of being caught? How often have I asked someone in a classroom to own up to an unseen misdemeanour only for everyone to sit tight (not this week – a hand went up, straight and true – hurrah!) I have certainly found this an interesting personal challenge at the start of a new calendar year.

Our start of term reading is from St Paul and he puts in another way: “whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure…if there be any virtue think on these things”.

Tonight, we will be celebrating our Burns supper with Form 8: another event that we missed last year. In amongst good food, good company, inspiring words and music (and perhaps some extravagant dancing) we might reflect that Robert Burns was rarely a man who worried about sticking to the letter of the law. Nonetheless, he never seemed to be frightened of speaking the truth as he saw it. I hope that is an example we are all able to set.

As always, you can keep up to date with things here at Cargilfield by following our various social media channels which are constantly updated; the links to these are at the bottom of this newsletter. Our news page on the website is updated daily and can be accessed here.

P1 Disney Karaoke

P1's began this term's Lucky Dip after school activity with Disney Karaoke. They chose to perform solos and duets and we also had a couple of boy bands and girl bands thrown into the mix. The children had microphones with sound effects and they wore a variety of Disney character costumes. Some of them put actions and dance moves to their songs. There was no lip-synching, everyone sang and cheered their friends enthusiastically. What a positive, tuneful start to the Spring Term!

Pipe Band perform at Care Home

The Pipe Band's first performance of the Spring Term was at the Cramond Residence Care Home where we were given a very warm welcome by the staff and residents who all came out in the sunshine to hear us play. It is lovely to be involved in our local community and we look forward to taking other music groups down to the care home soon.

Thank you to Friends of Cargilfield who raised over £1500 with various Christmas activities, despite being unable to have a Christmas Fair again this year due to Government restrictions. Lecture: The Impossible Row

On Wednesday, we welcomed entrepreneur and open sea rower, Jamie Douglas-Hamilton, to give a lecture on 'The Impossible Row'. In 2019, Jamie and his crew attempted to row the 600 mile passage of water that stretches from the southern tip of South America to the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, known as Drake's Passage. Their incredible act of endurance set five Guinness World Records and was described as “one of the most impressive adventures ever undertaken”. The children say spellbound as they listened to Jamie talk about his incredible feat and had lots of questions to ask him afterwards!

First Match Day of term!

It was wonderful to have over 140 children playing hockey and netball on the first Wednesday afternoon of the new term.  The weather was lovely and all the children had lots of fun playing Loretto and St Mary's Melrose across all age groups.  Well done to everyone for playing so well and showing such good sportsmanship!

New Members of Staff

We welcome two new members of staff to Cargilfield this term. Following on from Mr Rees' retirement at Christmas, Ms Alexa Hare has joined us full time as Head of Art, having been helping out for the past few terms while Mr Rees was on secondment at Moray House.

We also welcome Miss Mhairi Hastie Smith as our Head of Games for the rest of the year in Mrs Mackenzie's absence. She is an experienced PE teacher, specialising in hockey and netball and she also enjoys outdoor pursuits!  We wish both of them the best of luck!
Cargilfield in Cricket Top 50!

Once again, Cargilfield is included in this year's prestigious Cricketer Magazine Schools' Guide, which lists the top senior and prep cricket schools in the UK.  We are the only Prep School in Scotland to appear, and we are proud of our growing girls' cricket programme, excellent coaching throughout the year, and the opportunity for girls and boys to play all year round.  Roll on the summer!

SAVE THE DATE!
Outdoor Learning Centre opening

We have not yet been able to come together as a school together to remember and celebrate the life of our much loved former colleague, Alison Combe, who died in January 2020.  The old cricket pavilion is currently being transformed in to an Outdoor Learning centre and will be named after Alison since she loved taking children outdoors and had a real love of the natural world. We are planning to have a memorial service in Chapel on Friday 25th March and also open the new OL centre with members of Alison's family als present. Please save the date and further information will be sent out.
