What Seattle is talking about

🗓️ The Washington Legislature began a new session on Monday and the agenda is already jam-packed. The 60-day session will see state lawmakers build upon the $59 billion budget they approved last spring. Items on the itinerary include addressing more than a dozen climate change proposals, editing the new Washington Cares Act, distributing $1 billion in unspent federal aid, addressing police accountability, finalizing our state’s redistricting plan, and much more. It’s sure to be a busy couple of months in Olympia. (Crosscut

🍣 Seattle’s seafood scene never disappoints. Even in the heart of winter, you can find the freshest fish, crab, and shellfish. If you’ve already worked up an appetite then you’re in luck: Eater has compiled a list of the best Sushi in the Seattle area. Treat yourself to a Winter Platter or a Crispy Sushi Rice Burger at Shiro’s or enjoy rotating seasonal selections and weekend brunch at Sushi Kappo Tamura. (Eater)

🏠 Believe it or not, Seattle is the eighth-most-affordable city in the U.S. for single renters. Don’t believe it? You’re not alone. Although our rents are high (*ahem* $1395 for a studio?!), a recent New York Times article ranks us at eighth because they register a single person’s average income as $89,644, making rent only 19 percent of total expenses. That amount comes from the U.S. Census Bureau, which pulled the average income of all “nonfamily households,” that is, a household in which none of the occupants are related. According to The Seattle Times’ FYI GUY, the median income for a “one-person” household in Seattle is $54,790. But even that number doesn’t account for the realities faced by individuals and households making less than the median; both articles tell very different stories of Seattle’s affordability. 🏀 Sue Bird is returning for one more season with the Seattle Storm. She was chosen by the Storm as the No. 1 pick of the 2002 WNBA draft and has spent her entire WNBA career with the team ever since. Bird is a four-time WNBA champion, a 12-time All-Star selection, and ranks first in the league for games played. Needless to say, we can’t wait to have her back. (King5)

One more thing….

You may be in the middle of Dry January — a month where people voluntarily refrain from drinking alcohol until February arrives. Or maybe you’re just looking to cut back on your alcohol intake and are flirting with a sober lifestyle for any number of reasons. 💪

No matter the motivation, we wanted to share some Seattle spots where you can partake in a wide range of non-alcoholic drink options:

🛍️ The West Seattle Thriftway sells a variety of non-alcoholic beers and spirits, including Wildwood Spirits Co."s non-alcoholic gin, which has “None of the alcohol, but all of the spirit.”

🍴 These Seattle restaurants and bars featured by Eater have a wide selection of zero-proof beverages, spanning everything from kombucha and mocktails to apple ginger lemonade and specialty sodas.

📫 If you’re looking for craft non-alcoholic beer options, the Washington Beer Blog and Thrillist offer up some tasty options that you can buy online or find at a local store.

And special thanks to reader Rachel B. for asking us to cover this topic!

We’ll see you all back here tomorrow — same place, same time.
