Water & Climate

Today’s choice tomorrow’s impact : Youth and Civil Society in the Water and Climate Nexus

During the COP26 that took place in Glasgow in November 2021, a session hosted at The Water Pavilion in the Blue Zone, took the opportunity to highlight the young leaders that have been creating their own paths in advocacy, innovation and policy connecting water and climate

The session created a platform for intergenerational experts to dialogue on issues, challenges and expose pathways for youth contribution and collaboration in building resilience in climate through water, such as the Youth for Water and Climate Platform.

If you want to know more, you can read the article on Ooskanews here and see the full video of the session here.

Why WASH must be at the top of the climate agenda

UNICEF published in November a briefing note exploring the opportunity that the WASH sector represents to contribute to global adaptation and mitigation goals. The note looks at the links between the WASH and the climate sector and highlights how the priority given to focus on climate-resilient water, sanitation and hygiene is crucial to take action on climate.

This note, aimed at planners, policy makers and experts of the sectors, brings three key messages :
  • Water is the primary medium through which we feel the effects of climate change.
  • The WASH sector is already investing in climate resilience, both mitigation and adaptation, and is part of the solution.
  • Investing climate finance in the WASH sector is increasingly seen as both an essential and attractive investment.

Butterfly Effect internal activities

Regional advocacy workshops

The international civil society coalition - the Butterfly Effect - co-organized a series of regional advocacy workshops for NGOs and CSOs working in the water sector between November and December 2021. These workshops allowed to deepen the messages identified during an online consultation (available in English, French or Spanish) conducted by the Butterfly Effect during the summer 21 and to bring out concrete political demands are the main objectives of these workshops.

We thank every CSO and NGO that took part in the workshops, as well as the regional coordinators for their precious support.

The Butterfly Effect is currently working on the synthesis of the workshops compiling all the demands and policy priorities expressed by civil society. This synthesis will then be published and opened for consultation and feedback.

Our call to the World Water Forum organizers

The Butterfly Effect, the Posceas (CSO Senegalese Platform) and the Coalition Eau cosigned a letter sent in October 2021 to the Forum’s organizers to address different issues related to the inclusion of civil society groups in the World Water Forum 2022.

Since its inception, the Butterfly Effect has made it its mission to ensure meaningful civil society participation in the Forums - influencing organizers to include civil society groups in all sessions, in all processes, including the political process, to ensure that the voices of all are heard and considered

If you feel that there are critical issues that need to be raised by the Butterfly Effect, please contact the Network Secretariat.

Call to video contribution

It is suggested that the person's testimony be filmed from the shoulders up, with good natural light and no filters. In the email message containing the video, please include the name of the person giving the testimony, the location (city and country) and the date the video was filmed.
