GPRTA Launches Refreshed Brand

On January 13, the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association (GPTRTA) launched their fresh look and a new video. The GPRTA is a non-profit marketing organization funded by partnership fees, memberships, marketing programs and fundraising initiatives.

Invest Grande Prairie and the City of Grande Prairie is one of the nine municipal partners they represent in the Grande Prairie region.

Final Reminder: Ernie Radbourne Pavilion RFP Deadline Is Monday!

The Ernie Radbourne Pavilion is the central administration building for Muskoseepi Park and provides meeting and event space. The facility has received more than 54,000 visitors in 2021. The 375 square foot kitchen is being leased for $950.00 monthly, including utilities and common area costs.

Housing

Last month, 75 homes were sold in the city, up from the 71 sold in December 2020 and 67 in December 2019. The average residential sale price in December was $324,393, an 2% increase from December 2020.

The year ended with 1,400 homes have sold in the City, a 27% increase from 2020 and a 3.93% increase over 2019. The 2021 average sale price was $318,509, comparable with the average sale price of $313,051 for 2020.

Housing Starts

Grande Prairie saw 6 single-family and 3 multi-family housing starts in December, compared to 6 single-family and 4 multi-family starts for the same period in 2020. Year-to-date, housing starts within the city were up 9% with 132 starts in 2021, compared to 121 in 2020. 
Regionally, there were 249 single-family and 62 multi-family starts in 2021, compared to 159 single-family and 54 multi-family starts for the same period in 2020.

New Construction

37 building permits worth over $1.7 million were issued in December 2021, compared to 60 permits worth over $7.9 million in December 2020, a 37% decrease in volume and 77% decrease in value.

2021 ended with the City issuing 639 permits worth over $84 million, compared to 2020 which saw 696 permits worth over $89 million.

Employment

The region's unemployment rate saw a decrease from 6.7% in November to 6.4% in December. Provincially, the unemployment rate saw a decrease from 7.2% in November to 6.9% in December.

Drilling Report

791 Drilling Licenses were issued in the Grande Prairie region for in 2021, up 99% from the previous year. Of the licenses issued last year, 328 were for oil, 449 for gas and 14 for other industry-related wells, compared to 124 oil, 266 gas and 7 for other industry in 2020.

Completions were up 78%, with 799 completions in 2021 compared to 463 for 2020.

Overdimensional Vehicles

657 overdimensional vehicles passed through the city in December 2021, up from the 393 vehicles recorded for December 2020. 7,654 overdimensional vehicles passed through the City in 2021, up from 5,869 vehicles recorded for 2020. There was a 30% increase in overdimensional vehicle traffic compared to 2020.

Commodities

Power Update

December 2021 settled at $126.27/MWh, representing a 228% increase from December 2020’s settle of $38.44/ MWh and a 27% increase from last month’s settle of $99.07/MWh.

The average price between the on-peak and off-peak for December differed by $67.95/MWh, resulting in on-peak and off-peak prices of $148.92/MWh and $80.97/MWh, respectively. December forwards traded between $99.25 and $117.50 per MWh.

Travel

The Grande Prairie Airport saw 12,936 passengers pass through its doors in October 2021, compared to 7,199 in 2020, an 80% increase.

The average hotel occupancy rate in Grande Prairie was 50.1% for November 2021, while the provincial average was 43.0%. Grande Prairie's occupancy rate was consistent with cities of similar size in Alberta, with Edson leading the province at 95.6% in November.
