Eye 102 at large

A very happy new year to all our friends and readers. We’re looking forward to a productive and eventful (in a good way) 2022, with lots of great articles and reviews in preparation for Eye 103 and beyond, and some plans for real-life (and online) events as we slowly get back into gear.

The new type special issue has been getting some warm feedback from readers, fellow writers and designers around the globe. One of the small pleasures of social media is seeing subscribers celebrate the arrival of their issue with an ‘unboxing video’, a snapshot of the cover, or a favourite spread. You can see a few such clips in this Eye 102 at large’ link. (Note that you have to be logged into an Instagram account to see these links properly – sorry.)

Talking of our Instagram account, you may have noticed a few changes. In normal times, we usually publish extracts from all the latest issue's articles and reviews on our website. However eyemagazine.com is currently undergoing some repair work, so there won’t be any new articles or blog posts in the next few weeks.

To make up for this, we have published some Eye 102 extracts on Instagram (where we now have 60k followers), to give potential readers an idea of what’s in the issue. Read about Thomas Huot-Marchand, Laura Meseguer, November, ‘Typographics 21’, the Nebiolo legacy and 007 logo designer Joe Caroff.

Lorraine Wild. The ‘Great Wheel of Style’, also knowns as the ‘Life Cycle’ or ‘Tao’ of style. See Eye no. 36 vol. 9, summer 2000, the ‘Design is publishing’ special issue.

Despite the hard-hat website maintenance going on behind the scenes, you can still read popular (and less well known) articles on the Eye site. For instance: stone-cold classics such as Reputations: Sheila Levrant de Bretteville by Ellen Lupton, Nick Bell’s ‘The steamroller of branding’ and ‘Places need signs’ by information designer Rob Waller. And reviews such as Peter Buwert’s take on The Politics of Design (Eye 93), and Ruth Sykes’s review of Women Design (Eye 97).

And it was good to be reminded of Louise Sandhaus’s great Eye 36 Reputations piece about designer Lorraine Wild (see her ‘Tao of Style’, above) in Jarrett Fuller’s recent Scratching the Surface interview with Wild (no. 204.)

We have endeavoured to keep the Eye Events list up-to-date (while the workers are busy under the wireframe), so you can find out about new exhibitions coming up at Sir John Soane’s Museum, Hauser & Wirth New YorkWinchester’s Arc (Ravilious, above) and ‘Icons’ (see below) by Susan Kare at the Museum of Printing and Graphic Communication in Lyon, France.

Our next Type Tuesday event will be on 8 March – please save the date. You can click on Eye’s YouTube channel to experience a recordings of online Type Tuesdays from last year: ‘Eye on Type’, an Eye 102 preview featuring Thomas Huot-Marchand, Laura Meseguer and November, and the ‘Eye 101 launch’, with Anette Lenz, Mario Eskenazi, Jim Sutherland and Elizabeth Resnick. More to come before long.

Best wishes for 2022

John L. Walters, editor
