What's on Our Minds 🤔

Predict Lightning Strikes using Django and AWS

What if you could predict the first strike of any thunderstorm with 99.6% accuracy and a 15- to 25-minute lead time? With FLASH Scientific Technology’s proprietary and patent-issued algorithm and forecast technology, you can. Six Feet Up's expert developers helped FLASH optimize its code structure; build an API with Django that is fast, efficient and accurate; and deploy a product that is both serverless and scalable. FLASH not only saves lives, but it saves time and money. Due to the impressive, purposeful and transformative nature of the technology, FLASH has been designated as one of Six Feet Up’s 10 IMPACTFUL Projects.

S3, Presigned Posts and the Importance of Precise Error Messages

What started as a “simple” automation uncovered an S3 issue that almost had the Six Feet Up team stumped. Read about the issues faced, and how Six Feet Up used the S3 Presigned URLs and Presigned Posts features to give presenters the ability to upload presentation videos independently.

Projects on Deck 👷‍♀️

What's been keeping us busy this month:
  • We’re helping to scale the Open Source AWX Ansible project. The project started with an evaluation of needs. Next, we developed load testing plans and test deployments to understand the workload profile and how to run it at almost 10,000 system scale.
  • In an effort to modernize their technology suite — and stay in the ecosystem of the Purdue College of Engineering — the CISTAR (Center for Innovative and Strategic Transformation of Alkane Resources) team has migrated their website to the Plone CMS. This effort allows the CISTAR team to make all the necessary updates to the website content without intervention from software developers, unlike their previous 20-year-old system.
  • For the training courses offered by the Linux Foundation — and in order to provide ready-to-use Kubernetes clusters through a one-click experience — we have developed an application that creates resources on Digital Ocean on behalf of the trainee, shows resources status and removes resources upon completion of the course.

Cal's Cool Tools 🧰

Latest cool finds from our CTO Calvin Hendryx-Parker:
  • DuckDuckGo !Bang: Use !bangs (a.k.a. shortcuts) to quickly take you to search results on other sites. With thousands of !bangs and counting, say goodbye to traditional search.
  • Mutagen: Sync your files while doing development on Docker. Plus, the side feature is great for one-off commands.
  • Maestral: Exclude local files from syncing and allow syncing of multiple Dropbox accounts using this lightweight command line Dropbox client for macOS and Linux. Bonus: Maestral supports gitignore patterns.
  • Modern Unix: Check out this collection of modern/faster/saner alternatives to common unix commands.
