Florida State University awarded $27M federal education research laboratory

The Florida Center for Reading Research at Florida State University has won a $27 million, five-year contract to operate the Regional Educational Laboratory for the Southeastern United States.

The REL program includes 10 regional labs funded through the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education. The labs are designed to bridge the gap between educators and policymakers by providing research-based strategies to improve learning outcomes for K-12 students.

FSU faculty release guide to coaching players with hidden disabilities and conditions

A new book, “Reach Every Athlete: A Guide to Coaching Players with Hidden Disabilities and Conditions,” by Chris Stanley, a research faculty member at Florida State University’s Florida Center for Reading Research, and Tim Baghurst, the director of FSU COACH, helps guide coaches at all levels who may knowingly, or unknowingly, have an athlete on their team with an HDC. Stanley and Baghurst help clarify the impact of coaching athletes with an HDC and provide coaching tips and best practices.

Jamie Quinn

Photo of studentJamie Quinn, research faculty at FSU’s Florida Center for Reading Research, joined the  FSU Interdisciplinary Data Science Master’s Degree Program computer science program as a part-time student in Fall 2021 to acquire new data management skills. Quinn is a three-time FSU alumna with a doctorate in developmental psychology who conducts analytical research on early education.

Rachelle Johnson

Photo of studentRachelle Johnson is a Ph.D. student in Developmental Psychology, as well as a FIREFLIES fellow. Rachelle’s goal is to further our understanding and support of students with learning disabilities. Her research focuses on the role psychological factors, particularly motivation, play in the academic achievement of students with learning disabilities. Recently, Rachelle contributed to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services Blog, where she discusses disability identity.
