How Eating the Right Foods Can Fix Your Mood

There is emerging research which explores how our diet can improve our gut health, which can in turn help boost our mood. Let’s take a closer look at gut health and the link between food and mood.

Our large intestine is full of trillions of bacteria. There is a mixture of good (and not so good) bacteria in our gut, which has more of an impact on our health than you might think. Good bacteria feeds on the fibrous parts of foods that our body cannot digest and produces chemicals that can influence our emotions. These chemicals travel all over the body to help regulate hormone levels, including those that affect mood.

Pilot Study of a Decision-Aid for People with Depression and At-Risk Alcohol Use

Depression and at-risk alcohol use are common in the Australian community, and often co-occur. Decision-making about treatment for co-occurring depression and at-risk alcohol use is complex, as decisions need to take into account two sets of symptoms. Moreover, many people with these co-occurring conditions report needing more information and support when deciding on treatment.

Decision-aids (DAs) aim to better involve people to make decisions based on up-to-date clinical evidence, patients’ values, and life situations. This study will evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of an online DA for people considering treatment options for co-occurring depression and at-risk alcohol use.

Healthy Lunchbox Week is Coming Soon - 1st - 6th February

Healthy Lunchbox Week is an initiative of Nutrition Australia that aims to inspire Australian families to create healthy and enjoyable lunchboxes.

Did you know children consume around 30% of their daily food intake at school? Most of this comes from the contents of their lunchbox. What children eat during their day at school plays a crucial role in their learning and development.

Healthy Lunchbox Week helps families prepare healthy lunchboxes by:

  • inspiring healthy lunchbox ideas and recipes

  • informing a healthy lunchbox balance across core food groups

  • awareness of lunchbox food hygiene and safety.

Why 6 - 12 February?

Occurring at the start of Term 1, Healthy Lunchbox Week provides timely information for families as they return to the routine of daily lunchbox packing. It also supports schools and teachers to share healthy lunchbox messages within their school community.

Ararat Fitness Centre Survey

Ararat Rural City Council have launched the below online survey to gain feedback from the community that will help shape a feasibility study to guide future redevelopment of the Ararat Fitness Centre.

The survey will occur concurrently with focus group consultations that Council are hosting throughout January and February with existing user groups and sporting clubs.

Council CEO, Dr Tim Harrison said that community input would be vital in shaping the redevelopment of the centre into a modern, accessible sports hub that increases programming and participation.

“While the Fitness Centre has served the community well, the aging infrastructure is not up to modern standards to accommodate the range of programming needed for a vibrant and growing community,” Dr Harrison said.

Victoria's Hospitalisations Rise to 1,206 as IVF Treatments Reinstated

Victoria's COVID-19 hospitalisations have risen to 1,206, up from 1,173 reported on Wednesday, and a further 15 deaths were recorded in the state.

Of the patients in hospital, there are 122 in intensive care, 40 of whom are receiving ventilation.

It comes as Victoria resumes IVF treatments, following a public campaign urging the government to reinstate the fertility procedure.

IVF treatments were halted earlier this month as part of a three-month suspension of non-urgent elective surgeries in response to the Omicron wave.

But the Victorian government has allowed the in vitro fertilisation procedures to go ahead once again, saying the workforce and equipment used was not "imperative" to support the pandemic response.
