A Message from the Dean

Aloha Thompson School!

We’re over halfway through the semester and you are all doing so many AMAZING things! Your accomplishments and engagements shine through in student hui newsletters, department social media posts, local newspapers, inspiring webinars, insightful scholarly reports, and important publications.

The Thompson School is built from the tremendous dedication of students, faculty, staff, and alumni over so many years and following a distinguished legacy of extraordinary leaders, including Myron “Pinky” Thompson, for whom our school is named, and Dean Noreen Mokuau, who brought us together into this school in 2016. As you will see from the highlights and opportunities below we continue to meet our kuleana in teaching, understanding, sharing, supporting and building scholarship towards improving lives, increasing equity, and supporting others, especially those who are vulnerable and suffering. I feel fortunate every day to be part of this wonderful community and am inspired by your achievements, commitments, and passion for wellbeing and health.

With much gratitude and aloha for all you do,
Tetine
Building Connections: Academic Journeys
Jackie, MSW Student: I’ve worked as a social worker for over a decade. I became a single mom three years ago and I suddenly became part of one of the vulnerable populations that I help serve. I now hope to advocate for other women that are D/V, trauma survivors and economically disadvantaged so that they can heal, thrive and raise their children with dignity. Here is one of my favorite memories with my son:

Governor Ige applauds several Thompson School Students:

"Quick shoutout to several students from UH School of Social Work and Public Health, who have been assisting with COVID-testing, intake, and basic social services to help those in our homeless community.
These students also work one day a week assisting with basic paperwork and connection to homeless outreach services. Our students are doing great work in the community and through internships, helping to make Hawaii a better place to live for all."

Great Job, Students!

Column: For pregnancies, vaccine questions natural, benefits substantial

OPHS Alumna Jennifer Elia, Dr.PH. had her article published in the MidWeek. She is the maternal and infant health lead for the Early Childhood Action Strategy.

"Four years ago, when I was pregnant with my first child, I found myself questioning my habits and actions like never before. What kinds of fish are safe and how much should I eat? Are there certain kinds of exercise that could actually be harmful? If I attend a loud concert, will it make my baby anxious or uncomfortable?

As a public health professional, I often turned to science for answers to these and other questions. Yet as any expecting mother will tell you, sometimes we need more than facts. We also want reassurance that we’re doing everything in our power to protect the new life growing within us, and that we’re making the best decisions for ourselves and our families.

Now that I’m pregnant again during this pandemic, the biggest question is: How can I protect my baby, myself, and my family against COVID-19? When I consider the science, the answer is clear: Get vaccinated. Besides being proven safe for me, the vaccine itself doesn’t actually reach the baby; it doesn’t cross the placenta or make its way into breast milk. Rather, it stimulates my body to create antibodies that protect me from the virus, and that give my baby natural resistance to it after he’s born. Looked at it rationally, the vaccine provides excellent protection for me, my baby and my entire family."

Youth Council Slipper Awareness Display - Project with Grad Hui

The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii Youth Council is excited to announce our 21,000 Lives Display. In Hawaii, 21,000 keiki will ultimately die from smoking unless the current smoking rates decline. It’s the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

To bring attention to this tragic figure, the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii Youth Council is collecting 21,000 pairs of new slippers to represent these lost lives. We are requesting donations of slippers from Grad Hui to help us reach this goal.

The Youth Council is happy to arrange for a pickup of slippers that Grad Hui will collect. After collecting slippers from our community partners, we will set up various secured public displays which will culminate in a display and press conference at the Hawaii State Capitol. The time frame we are looking at for public displays is in late November or early December, so we are collecting donations now.  Since this effort would not be possible without the entire community, the Youth Council would love to display the Grad Hui logo on our public displays if you wish.

Through this awareness display, the Youth Council wants lawmakers to see that we cannot wait another year for action on this important issue!
