St. Olave’s is situated on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek Nations, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. This territory is also covered by the Toronto Purchase. Today, Toronto is home to many Indigenous people and we recognize their enduring presence and connection to this land. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather on this land, and we commit to and pray for the work of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. We are closed to in-person worship.

Rector’s Messsage

There are several things about the Wedding at Cana story that link it to the story of the crucifixion. If you look at the two stories in the Gospel of John side by side, you will begin to notice several similarities. In both stories, the Gospel writer addresses Mary as “mother” precisely four times. And in both, she is addressed by Jesus as “woman,” an usual and striking form of address for a son to use of his mother. And in both stories is mentioned the “hour” of Jesus, when he will bow his head and give up his spirit upon the cross. And finally, it is said that the wedding was held on the “third day” (that is, three days after Jesus encountered Nathanael) and even the earliest Christian readers of this Gospel would immediately recognize the expression – “on the third day” - as a reference to the resurrection.

I think the point of linking these two stories is that, like the crucifixion of Christ, the depletion of wine reserves is only half the story. Suffering, scarcity, decline, pandemics, illness, loss and even death are only half the story. For on the third day, Christ will rise again, wine will flow freely, and joy will be restored.
