It is with sadness that we announce that Brian Sung’s last day with the School was March 4, 2022. Brian is leaving us to be the Audiology Practice Lead for Vancouver Coastal Health, replacing the retiring Marianne McCormick. Despite the short time Brian was with the SASS, he has made valuable contributions to the ACCE team and his commitment and engagement will be truly missed. Our loss is VCH’s gain. Good luck Brian and remember, you are still part of the SASS family!
Clinical Faculty Awards for Excellence in Clinical Education

The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences is honoured to announce the recipients of the Awards for Excellence in Clinical Education for 2020.

Monica Francella received the Elizabeth MacLeod Award for Excellence in Clinical Education (Speech-Language Pathology) for 2020. Monica practices through the CAYA-Communication Assistance for Young Adults program and she works in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. Monica is a long-standing member of our Clinical Faculty and is well known and held in high regard by the clinical community. Her students observed that Monica builds confidence through feedback and conversations that focus on self-reflection and positive solutions. Her active caring and kindness, supported her students to develop in a seamless progression towards independence.

Dr. Anne Woolliams received the Noelle Lamb Award for Excellence in Clinical Education (Audiology) for 2020. Dr. Woolliams is an Audiologist and the owner of Soundwave Audiology with several sites in Alberta.  She leads a tremendous team of Audiologists and has been a Clinical Faculty member and consistent supporter of the UBC  Audiology program for more than 15 years.   Dr. Woolliams has special interests in pediatric hearing care, tinnitus management and auditory processing disorders.   Students placed at her clinics consistently noted her passion for Audiology and that she prioritizes time for ongoing learning, not just for students but for herself and the rest of her team.  Students feel well supported to develop to the best of their potential under her mentorship.

The faculty and administration of School of Audiology and Speech Sciences are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Monica and Anne for their many contributions to the School’s clinical education program, and would like to extend sincere congratulations to them both.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that our dear colleague and esteemed scholar, Dr. Susan Small, passed away on January 11, 2022. On behalf of the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Susan’s beloved family, friends, students, and colleagues at this difficult time.

At the School, Susan was an Associate Professor and Hamber Professor in Clinical Audiology since 2014, and an Assistant Professor from 2007 to 2014. Prior to her professorial appointment at UBC, Susan was a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Psychology at UBC (2007) and completed her Doctoral degree in the School with Professor David Stapells (2001-2007). During her doctoral studies, Susan served in various instructional capacities, including Teaching Assistant, Lab Instructor, and Sessional Instructor. Preceding her doctoral training, Susan completed a B.Sc. Honours degree in Zoology at UBC (1986), an M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences from SFU (1988), and a Masters degree in Audiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1991). Susan then practiced as an audiologist in the lower mainland from 1993-2006 at Sonus-Fraserview Hearing Clinics, and British Columbia Children’s Hospital. As a practicing audiologist she was a valuable clinical educator for a number of audiology students in the School.

This is a two part series on the benefits of being a Clinical Educator (CE) from the perspective of a CE. This issue, we will focus on the Audiology perspective with SASS Alumni and Clinical Educator, Stephanie Kore, RAUD.

How long have you been taking UBC SASS students?
I have been taking UBC students at Vancouver General Hospital since the fall of 2020.

What has been something you’ve learned from mentoring UBC SASS students?
I have learned that it is important to be curious with your students. You may not always have the answer to every “why” question as a mentor (and that is okay!). These mutual learning moments provide a great opportunity to work as a team and dive into the literature together. The audiology field is constantly evolving and taking students encourages me to keep up with new developments and challenge existing clinical perspectives to better support evidence-based practice.

Can you tell us about a time that pleasantly surprised you while supervising a UBC SASS student?
I have been pleasantly surprised with all of my students! The best surprises are qualities like passion, curiosity, and a willingness to continue working on and growing skills that may initially be difficult for the student such as interpreting acoustic reflex patterns or working through masking concepts.

What would you recommend to new CEs considering taking a UBC SASS student?
Take them! In my experience, students provide a new clinical perspective and a passion for learning that will continue to inspire you in your everyday practice, even after they have left.

Our next issue will focus on the Speech-Language Pathology perspective.
Almost Finished: The Student Perspective
Ever wonder what your students are thinking? We do too. This returning, two-part series will explore the student perspective on being out on externship during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What did you learn about working with clients that was surprising and positive?

Lauren, Year 2 Audiology Student: During my placements I was pleasantly surprised by people’s willingness and desire to connect with one another. There are so many barriers to communication and connection right now and so it’s been amazing to see all the positive interactions and relationships that have continued to develop despite challenging circumstances. Being able to relate and connect with clients and families has been the most meaningful part of my placements!

Michelle, Year 2 Speech Student: I discovered that each client I work with has something to teach me about the world, their communication difference and how it affects their life. Learning directly from clients is a privilege that builds respect and empathy, resulting in more effective therapy.

What would you like to say to the clinicians considering taking a student under these conditions?

Lauren: As students, we really appreciate all the support and guidance we receive from more experienced clinicians during our placements. Our time with you shapes the way we practice, and so clinical education is a great way to influence audiological care in the future. For clinicians contemplating a mentorship opportunity, the current class of audiology and SLP students are resilient, enthusiastic, and will bring a set of unique experiences and perspectives to your clinic!

Michelle: Being students throughout the pandemic has increased our resilience, adaptability and technological competence. However, nothing replaces learning directly from clinicians and clients in real-life settings. We are extremely thankful to the clinicians who have become mentors to us during this time and to those who are considering the opportunity. As students, we hope to bring a fresh perspective and partner with you during our learning. Your mentorship is integral to our clinical training.
