Attic Fire Damages Eastside Home in Elgin

1300 Block of Borden

Elgin, IL – On Thursday, January 6, 2022, shortly after midnight, members of the Elgin Fire Department responded to the 1300 block of Borden Drive for a report of a possible structure fire.

Responding fire companies found a two story home with fire burning through the roof and part the second floor.  The first crew arrived on scene in just over 5 minutes.  Fire crews deployed one hand line to extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control approximately twenty minutes after the arrival of the Fire Department. The home suffered extensive damage to the attic and second floor. Initial damage estimates are in excess of $40,000.

The home was occupied and the family was alerted by an odor of smoke and smoke detector activation. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries due to the fire. The home was red-tagged as it is uninhabitable and Code Enforcement was notified for follow-up. Initial indications show the fire may have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, the Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team is investigating to confirm the cause.

A Tip from Chief Cagann:

Make sure you have properly installed and maintained smoke detectors in your home and/or business. Smoke detectors are the first line of defense during a fire event. Test smoke detectors each month and make a habit of changing the batteries twice a year, like when you change your clocks.
