The very fact that we've made it to 2022 is a gift worthy of being celebrated. In today's reflection, Jeff reminds us that just as God has brought us along this far, through God's grace, we already have all that we need to continue our journeys.

Thoughts to Start the New Year
Take a moment to read Exodus 4:1-5. Moses is whining. He is such a baby. God is asking him to do something. God is promising him all this great stuff, and Moses is whining. “But what if they don’t like me, what if they yell at me, what if they throw stuff at me?” It is so you and me! What have you already convinced yourself is too difficult in 2022?
God is trying to tell Moses that the Creator of the universe is working hand in hand with him. God wants Moses to think like The Little Engine that Could…I think I can, I think I can, I think I can… Chapter 4 starts out, “What if they don’t believe me or listen?” So, God asks Moses, “What is in your hand?” Great question for you and me today.
What is in your hand as you set out on the adventure that is 2022?
The question is not, what is NOT in your hand?
The question is, what IS in your hand?
What do you have? What is a skill, what is a resource, what is a possibility for today?
- David: a sling shot for defeating giants
- Peter: a net—Jesus said, “Come fish for people.”
- Joseph and Daniel: dreams
- Jeremiah: a deed to a piece of land
- Amos: a plumb line and a basket of fruit
- Jesus: jars of water that he turns to wine
- Jesus: mud created from his spit, which he uses to heal the blind man
- Jesus: bread and wine at the end of a meal to offer Communion
The struggle that so many of us have in every aspect of life is that we look around at all the world has to offer. We associate success with certain gadgets and resources that we don’t currently possess. We play the same game that Moses does:
- What if…
- I don’t have…
- I can’t…
- I lack…
The first step is not to look and see what we don’t have. The first step is to see what we do have.
Seek first the Kingdom of God, where we find that together, we have all we need.
Happy New Year,
