January 2022 Newsletter

“Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder. Help someone's soul heal. Walk out of your house like a shepherd.” -- Rumi
Perspective - Purpose

Purpose is a statement of being (not doing).  It is who we are, and always have been, stripped of image and ego.  Some say it is who we are in God.  Life purpose is a high-level calling about how we choose to live our lives. It is a reference point or beacon for our goals and daily activities. Our purpose is the essence of our being, and it serves to guide us in making important choices on how we spend our time and live our lives.  It is something we do in all of our life roles, not just our job.

I’d like to invite you to pursue your purpose more deeply through two upcoming events:  Live with Purpose and Write Your Purpose Statement.  Many of you will say you know your purpose, but it isn’t written.  The process of structured reflection and writing can be helpful.  The start of the new year is a good time to reflect on why we are here. Choose Purpose for yourself and choose to Mentor for Purpose.  Look at the upcoming events below and decide to make an investment in yourself.  Pass this along to co-workers, volunteers, and family.

January is National Mentoring Month as sponsored by the national mentoring organization, Mentor.org.  This is an opportunity to collectively advocate for mentoring.  There is a wealth of resources at this link.  Consider following and sharing my posts on LinkedIn as I will be posting regularly during January.

The Greater Cincinnati Mentor Leadership Alliance is a collaboration of volunteers and service professionals in the Cincinnati/NKY area working to improve the capability of people in need.  This newsletter aims to present information, ideas and tools to grow personally and to better serve others.  Our target audience includes Alliance Members and Friends, mentor program leaders and new or experienced volunteer mentors and life skills instructors.  We hope to touch you with knowledge and skills to allow you to “live, work and serve to your purpose, passion and potential”.  Please share this with someone who might consider life skills or mentoring as a volunteer role.

Deeper Purpose Programming

The work we do touches the lives of people at risk AND their mentors (AND your staff).  Let’s develop goals to impact mentor’s lives too.  They are in our care and we have an opportunity to "cultivate and grow" them.  Discovering our treasure (finding one’s purpose including values, strengths, needs, beliefs) is life changing.  Many of our GCMLA Members want to implement deeper Purpose programming.  I created this resource page for your consideration.
Live with Purpose on Facebook
This Facebook page is a compilation of personal writings by Tony Aloise and shared links. The themes include Life, Life Skills, Volunteering and living to our purpose and potential.  Consider going back to old posts to see great stories about Living with Purpose.  Invite your staff and volunteers to follow the page.  Here is a recent favorite…

Relentless positivity doesn’t lead to happiness; being emotionally honest (authenticity) can help us connect with our values and gain resilience.  Our happiness comes not as a goal, but as a byproduct of engaging in honesty with ourselves. Click here to read the rest of the article.
