How to be an Active Bystander: Virtual Workshop with Advancing Justice Chicago
- Did you hear allyship has been named 2021 Word of the Year? So what does that mean for you? In general, allyship is committing to support a group you're not part of, typically a marginalized group, but it can take many forms. One way is to educate yourself (and your friends and family) on how to become an active bystander. That's when you recognize a conflict and take action to try to diffuse it. As an active bystander, you're pushing back against the bystander effect (a phenomenon when individuals are less likely to help a victim if others are around).
- In January, grit2 and Advancing Justice Chicago will host a workshop to learn about types of disrespect and dangers facing groups and individuals - from microaggressions to violence. Participants will learn what to look for and the positive impact bystander intervention has as well as learn the five strategies for intervention (5Ds). While the training's genesis came from the rise of harassment against Asian/American communities, it applies across many groups and situations.
- Whether at the market, in school, or around the dinner table - understanding how to recognize and diffuse a negative situation are valuable skills.
