Internment Camps Presentation at Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to "Fort Lincoln Internment Camps," a free presentation by Perry Hornbacher on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Former Governors’ Mansion. The Former Governors' Mansion is located at the corner of Fourth Street and Avenue B in Bismarck.

Hornbacher, a professor of history at Bismarck State College, will focus on the role of Fort Lincoln Internment Camp as a detention center for Japanese-Americans. On March 29, 1942, under an executive order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the forced evacuation and detention of West Coast residents of Japanese-American ancestry began. The internment forced relocation and incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese, 60,000 of whom were American citizens. 

The Former Governors’ Mansion is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free. The mansion is currently open the second Friday and Saturday of each month from 1 to 5 p.m. To make an appointment outside of regular hours, phone 701.328.9528 or email jcampbell@nd.gov.
