Dear Fellow LGBTQ+ Executive Directors,

We hear from nonprofits regularly that it is difficult to navigate executive transition. There are a lot of factors that contribute to leadership change being challenging—the way nonprofits are structured, scarce resources, and lack of strong leadership development and career ladders within organizations. So, how can we prepare our organizations to manage executive transition gracefully and with minimal stress or disruption of our mission work? Additionally, how can we run our executive hiring process in transparent and equitable ways? And how can we support our board members who are thrust into the hiring role and may not have the relevant experience?

We are hosting a Leadership Transition Summit to talk about new ways of approaching executive transition. We’ll hear from two national experts on transition and equity in nonprofits, Frances Kunreuther and Sean Thomas-Breitfeld from the Building Movement Project in New York. Then, we’ll hear about several successful executive transitions in Washington State as we are joined by a panel of leaders from Seattle Works (Seattle), La Casa Hogar (Yakima), and others. We’ll have time to discuss how we can diversify the candidate pool, distribute leadership within an organization, develop leaders from within our communities, and when to use outside supports like a search firm or an interim executive.

This Summit is about bringing our community together to share what works and learn from each other. Don’t miss the chance to join on January 26! You don’t have to be in transition to benefit from these conversations—great transitions often are made possible by work that is done to lay the groundwork far in advance. Consider inviting others from your staff and board to join the conversation as well—this Summit will benefit from the perspectives of veteran leaders, emerging leaders, and board members.

Let’s come together to advance our understanding of how to recruit and support the new leaders we will need in the coming years!

Take care and stay in touch,
Laura

P.S. I hope you can join us  for a free event on January 11: Making Space for Wellness. For staff at all levels, this is a chance to take time for wellness and to reflect on how you can support employee wellness in your organization.

Leadership Transition Summit

Wednesday, January 26, 2022
10:00AM - 2:30PM
Cost: $20 Members of Washington Nonprofits / $40 Not-yet-Members

Executive transition in nonprofits can be perilous and difficult to navigate. At this summit, we will learn about how to plan leadership transitions that are positive for the organization and the people who are stepping in and out of leadership.

Frances Kunreuther and Sean Thomas-Breitfeld, co-directors of the Building Movement Project, will join us to share their perspective. Building Movement Project is a leading national capacity builder and is known for their research and action related to racial equity in nonprofits, generational shifts and leadership transitions. We will also hear from Washington State nonprofit leaders who have approached leadership transition in a thoughtful way and can share lessons learned.

Making Space for Nonprofit Wellness

Tuesday, January 11, 2022
2:00PM - 3:30PM
Cost: Free

We're exhausted. What can we do?
It's been a long pandemic. Join us for this convening as we work together to identify what we can do to care for ourselves and our staff and volunteers.

We will explore:

  • Which policies and practices are most effective in creating a healthy work environment for all?
  • How do we support staff members remotely?
  • How should we respond to a staff member in crisis?
  • What community resources are available?
  • What conversations should we be having with our staff team?
  • How can we manage our own overwhelm so that we can show up in helpful ways for our team?

Come as you are and bring your questions. We'll be joined by mental health and wellness experts who will offer advice and provide information about resources that can help.
