Message From Superintendent Jett
Dear 742 Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back. I hope your break was restful and enjoyable.
As we prepare for winter weather, a gentle reminder to please send your child in warm clothing, including head and hand coverings, jacket, and boots. If you need assistance in obtaining any of these items, please contact your child’s school counselor or principal.
Throughout the coming months, we will encounter snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. The safety of students and staff is paramount, and we carefully consider weather conditions when making decisions about school cancellations. For additional information regarding weather-related school closings, please visit our school website at https://www.isd742.org/Page/998.
On this day we commemorate Dr. King's dream of a multiracial nation united in justice, peace and reconciliation.
Instead of ONE day of service and community building, this year's MLK Community Celebration will be a series of COVID-safe community events on Saturday, Jan. 15 for the family, Sunday, Jan. 16 for praise and worship, and Monday, Jan. 17 for the Keynote speaker and main event. Unfortunately, there will be no breakfast this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Family conferences will be held remotely on January 20 from 4-7 p.m. Families may use Skyward to sign up to request a conference call from your student’s teacher beginning on Thursday, January 13.
A list of teacher phone extensions will be available on our Tech webpage on January 20 if you would like to reach out to your student’s teacher.
All students at Tech benefit from the different components of the BARR (Building Assets Reducing Risks) model. Here is the BARR mission statement:
BARR’s mission is to create equitable schools where every student, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic status, has access to high quality education where adults know them, recognize their strengths, and help them succeed. Built from a foundational belief that all schools have the capacity to make key changes using current staff, BARR produces proven and significant results.
All freshmen are part of a BARR cohort with the same 4 content teachers. We have 2 cohorts of BARR for sophomores this year. As each trimester ends and a new one begins, our BARR staff takes time to reflect on our work and set goals for trimester two. One of the reflections was the amount of intentional time spent as a team talking about students in 9th and 10th grade during trimester 1.
*Approximately 100 meetings were held in Big Block and Small block discussing students in the different cohorts. Discussion includes students’ strengths, involvement in school activities, school successes, concerns, missing assignments, grades, teacher/student relationships, and others.
*Eighteen hours were spent talking about students with more significant needs in our Risk Review meetings and getting them the resources and interventions they need to be successful.
*Approximately 250 students were reviewed by their BARR teachers and staff. The goal is for every student to be reviewed by their BARR team this year.
As you can see, a lot goes on behind the scenes of just the classroom. Tech teachers and staff take their jobs seriously and will do whatever it takes for their students to have success.
If you have any questions about the BARR program, please feel free to get in touch.
After school academic support for all students available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-6 p.m. in B108 at Tech. Students must register prior to attending.
