Running Free: January 2022
From the Bridge:

We kicked off 2022 in typical conference preparation fashion – though this year’s last-minute switch to a virtual event has us working at full tilt even more so than usual. We appreciate the dedication and efforts of the Conference Committee working hard to (once again) deliver a high-quality, not-to-be-missed event. Our opening night Gallery Launch will provide access to an exhibit in our virtual gallery that highlights 20 years of TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series - you won't want to miss a wander around the outstanding artefacts and photos of the events and people connected with tall ships and sail training.

This shift to a virtual venue created an opportunity to increase our focus on resources that address the need for captains and crew. Registration for the Annual Conference includes registration for the Crew Resource Days for professional development, online sail endorsement course and job fair. Everyone who is interested in finding work aboard a sail training vessel or tall ship can network with industry experts and employers to learn about pathways and possibilities for beginning or advancing their tall ship career.

In consultation with our Conference Committee, the Board of Directors and many of you, we have created new ways to make this year’s event accessible and affordable. With thanks to our long-time supporter and sponsor Allen Insurance & Financial, we can offer affordable registration fees to suit different budgets. And many individuals and Foundations have made contributions to support crew grants for entry-level and advancing crew members. The funds available include:
  • The Ernestine Bennett Memorial Fund, which has been refreshed by a recurring pledge from the Stanton D and Ernestine J Bennett Charitable Trust with a renewed focus on professional crew development
  • The Liz Strojny Memorial Fund, which continues to support crew grants for the Annual Conference and other professional development events
  • Mariner Support Fund, filled with additional donations designated to support mariner licensing courses and fees
You can find out more on our website and complete an application for support online – special thanks to our donors and supporters who know and value the impact of sail training and the tall ship experience for people of all ages.

One thing we know is that the value of any event, discussion or meeting is a function of the presence and engagement of the people who participate. All the best and brightest sail training programs and tall ship operators will be at our Annual Conference – so we look forward to seeing YOU there!

Fair winds,

Kris Von Wald, PhD
