WELCOME

This is an update email to inform those interested in Fresh Expressions in the Diocese of Southwark and those involved in Pioneering about our events, training opportunities, meet-ups and vocational dialogues. So please do read on if this is of interest to you.

Happy New Year !

The last couple of years have not been easy at all, and we enter 2022 in the continuing pandemic, but even with all of this, your FX & Pioneering Team is upbeat and looking forward to supporting and encouraging missional innovation in these areas in the year ahead.  There are a number of new things and further details for things mailed out in December's FX & Pioneering E-News. But saying all of that, happy new year from Will Cookson, Ian Mobsby and David Cundill.

THE ROLE OF MISSIONAL MENTORING & COACHING

First Online Learning Event
with Tim Lea,

National Fx Networks Facilitator

20th January 11.15 to 12.45

If the world is changing more quickly than ever before, the words of Joshua echo through the centuries to us, “…Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before…..” How will we know which way to go? What role might coaching and mentoring play in that process? Is there a difference between coaching and mentoring? In fact understanding difference is vital for leadership in the new world.

A zoom gathering for pioneers across the diocese exploring Pioneer Mission Mentoring with Tim Lea, Networks facilitator and animator for Fresh Expressions.

20th January: 11:15 to 12.45 on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88949417264
Meeting ID: 889 4941 7264

RESTARTING YOUR FRESH EXPRESSION
led by Canon Will Cookson and Revd David Cundill

This event is aimed at those who lead and help with fresh expressions of Church and wish to restart theirs post pandemic

The pandemic has hit many churches and congregations badly over the past two years. It has especially hit those who have used third party spaces to host their fresh expression or through constraints on space and a lack of volunteers. As we look forward to coming out of this pandemic we thought it would be helpful to reflect together on what we can do to move things forward to restart and reengage with our local communities.

This session is open to anyone looking to restart their fresh expression. We will look at some of the common issues that people are facing; rebuilding a team; reengaging with your fresh expression community. We will also be looking at what changes we might need to make to engage with people post-pandemic. Above all there will be space to discuss with others the particular situation that you find yourself in and how you might move forward.

The session will be hosted by the fresh expressions team Canon Will Cookson and Revd David Cundill. The event is free.

1. 10th May 2pm to 4pm   book free places here
2. 10th May 7.30 to 9.30pm book free places here

SEEKING NEW LAY PIONEERS

Pioneering is about doing new things and doing them differently.
Are you someone who:
  • wants to reach those outside the Church’s traditional structures?
  • is creative and likes taking the initiative (or others say that this is you)?
  • is willing to try new things?
If the answer is yes, God might be calling you to ministry as a Lay Pioneer. We are setting up a number of short evening sessions through the Spring for people to come and have an initial exploration of what a Lay Pioneer might do and be. We will be covering:
  • The qualities required
  • The different pathways open to you
  • The different types of pioneering
  • What steps you will need to take to explore this further
  • What support we give as a Dicoese
Above all it will be a place to explore and ask questions. The session is free. At this stage there is no requirement to do anything other than book to let us know you are coming .

The event will be held on Zoom, and you can book free places for these sessions using the Eventbrite link below:

1. Feb 17th 7.30 to 8.30pm with Will Cookson, book free place here
2. March 7th 7.30 to 8.30pm with Ian Mobsby, book free place here
3. April 7th 7.30 to 8.30pm with David Cundill, book free place here
4. May 16th 7.30 to 8.30pm with Ian Mobsby,  Zoom ID: 962 197 6824 eventbrite booking to follow soon.

So we really need your proactive assistance to help those who may be interested in these discernment dialogues to come to them, which may be people with emerging vocations coming from the Greenhouse initiative.

What is this online course about?

This course is aimed at those who are interested in New Monasticism and new forms of Christian spiritual/religious ecclesial communities in the context of building new expressions of Church including the Fresh Expressions initiative. It is aimed at those who either have no or little experience of such communities, or who want the space to explore them more practically and theologically.

What are the dates of the course?

31st January, 7th, 14th, 21st February 2022, 7.15pm to 9.15pm.

What will happen?

The course will be run over the Zoom app with supportive handouts to explore four different aspects of missional new monastic communities. This will be run on Tuesday mornings over four weeks.

What will I gain out of the experience?

  • A greater understanding of the marks of New Monastic Communities and the four practical outworkings.
  • A greater appreciation of the theology and vocation behind New Monastic Communities that draw on the charisms and understandings of traditional monasticism and the religious life.
  • A greater appreciation for the differing forms of New Monasticism in the UK and abroad.

Who is running this learning experience?

The 4 sessions will be led by Canon Revd Ian Mobsby who has over twenty five years experience of New Monastic Communities, who has been involved in founding three communities. The Moot Community in the City of London, the Wellspring Community Peckham and finally the beginnings of the Blackfriars Community London. Ian has written and spoken widely about missional new monasticism in the UK and abroad particularly in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

GODSEND BOOK REMINDER

At last; the excellent Godsend, App and web based resource for starting and developing Fresh Expressions and New Worshipping Communities is available as a book. This is a must have if you’re involved in one of these or looking to start something. If you’re part of a Greenhouse Team you’ll find this especially helpful.Easy to read, it starts with an “Overview” that introduces you to the idea of finding one or more friends, and with them starting a new Christian community among people you know. The Overview provides much of what you need to get started. The rest of the book uses real life examples to explore topics such as listening to the context, organising practical expressions of love around which people can gather, forming community with these people, sharing your Christian faith with them, helping them where they are to become a worshipping community connected to the wider church, and encouraging those new to faith to repeat the process with their friends.

You can turn to the relevant chapter as you need it and use the discussion questions at the end to help your team prayerfully discover what God wants you to do next. The book is based on the wisdom of many practitioners over the past 20 to 30 years. It contains loads of stories, advice and frameworks to help you join a growing company of people who are bringing discipleship, mission and church together in their everyday lives.
The book can be ordered by visiting Amazon: https://amzn.to/3ydJalT

The free to use, just in time app FX Godsend is available on Android and Apple from their App stores. This excellent resource takes 15 years of fresh expressions experience from across the fresh expressions community and provides it into bite-sized chunks that help you work out what to do at any stage of developing new contextual forms of church. It is ideal to learn at your own pace, with a friend or with a team at any time and in any place. You can now also access the Godsend material through the Church Support Hub’s Greenhouse pages to help design, grow and cultivate new Christian communities; www.fxgreenhouse.info.
