February's First Friday

The first Friday in February seems like a good time to wake out of our winter slumber and begin conversations about the coming year. We've used the winter months to strengthen our facility and administrative functions for another action-packed season. With a project of this size, there is always something to fix, rework, build, and organize.

This year — all year — we are celebrating our five-year anniversary of the founding of this project. Yes, just over five years ago, our Founders put their heads together to imagine the possibilities. And look how far we've come.

Mark your calendar now for the evening of Thursday, March 31, to join us for a virtual celebration of our accomplishments and get an insider's look at what's in store.

Welcome, 2022!

Plan Bee

If you are interested in bees, honey, or seeing something that hasn't been around for over a hundred years, then you'll be interested in the beekeeping project we have in the works. Our farm manager, Dylan Wilson, has built a demonstration hive that will lead us to an in-depth study about bees and their habitat.

As noted in Volume Two of the FoxFire book series, "In the early days of beekeeping, the hives were nothing more than twenty-four to thirty-inch long section of hollow black gum trees, a fact that has caused even modern hives in the mountains today to be called "gums" or "beegums."

Dr. Lloyd Bailey will also share his research on this topic in the coming months.
So stay tuned, and plan to join us for a house swarming party soon.

Also Coming Soon

We're planning workshops beginning in April.

Get ready for basket making, egg decorating, sewing projects, blacksmithing, and our ever-popular broom-making class. Workshop details are not finalized yet, but we'll have many learning opportunities to share once our cabin porch classroom is ready. We'll update our website as we secure dates, and of course, will send you more information via this newsletter.
