Why we are wearing blue this Tuesday (and other updates!)

January 8, 2022

Dear colleagues and community,

Happy 2022! We hope that you had the chance to rest over break and that you are safe and healthy. As union leaders and educators, we are acutely aware of the challenges we all faced returning to school this week, so we also know that rest, safety, and health might not reflect where you are at currently.

We wanted to share a few brief updates from your union officers - specifically about our recent meeting with the interim CEO, our rep council, and bargaining that begins next week!

Meeting with HTH's new CEO:

If you missed the announcement before the break, Dr. Meadows resigned as CEO of HTH schools the week before break, and Dr. Kaleb Rashad was appointed as interim replacement. He reached out to our officers to set up a meeting for this week. The main focus of our conversation was a shared desire for a more collaborative relationship with our administration. Our progress as a union has been slowed by unnecessary delays when it comes to collaborating or even getting responses from central administration, and it is clear that we cannot afford any more delays when it comes to collaborating on solutions. We appreciated Kaleb’s emphasis on leading with learning: Centering student learning, and giving teachers the support they need to make that happen. We genuinely hope this is the beginning of a more collaborative relationship, as we work to protect what we treasure about our schools and to grow in the ways we need to grow.

Representative council & feedback from staff:

Thursday evening, elected site reps from across our schools convened at our second monthly Rep Council. Especially in the light of administrative changes, continuing staffing struggles, and now surging cases in this newest wave of the pandemic, this was a chance to get a temperature check at each campus. While staff has already been under a lot of pressure, it is clear that this new wave of COVID cases is pushing many staff and schools close to the breaking point. Beyond the issues we will negotiate in bargaining a long-term contract, there are some items that are immediately urgent and which can be addressed without official bargaining. Based on what representatives shared, we passed on these items to our interim CEO, as he is seeking feedback from the community.

We hope that leadership will take immediate action to resolve these concerns, many of which are existing issues amplified by this recent wave.

  • Covid safety: Staff need an immediate plan, with clear thresholds that determine when classes, teams, and schools shut down and move online. Based on current information, that is not available from county, state, or national officials, so we are left watching more and more teachers and students get sick and stay home, and wondering exactly when we will simply run out of humans to keep our doors open.

  • Academic Coach pay & recruitment: Leadership needs to increase that pay so we can fill empty positions and retain existing staff in order to meet legal requirements for student support if nothing else. (While teacher pay and benefits will be addressed through bargaining, that does not include classified staff like academic coaches, so their pay and benefits are up to the discretion of central administration.)

  • Coverage: Staffing shortages have been an issue all year, but with even more absences due to illness or quarantine, schools are scrambling to make sure an adult is available for each classroom. Kaleb has already sent in staff from the GSE & CMO to help provide coverage in schools, which has enabled us to stay open so far.

  • Adequate PPE: We need high quality masks (N95, for example) rather than the flimsy surgical masks that do not protect against aerosols.

Bargaining next week!

We finally have two confirmed dates this month: Tuesday, January 11, and Thursday, January 20. Staff has elected a bargaining team and shared collective priorities with them, and now it is finally time to bring that platform to the table! Our bargaining team will meet with the central administration's bargaining team to begin the process of negotiating our first contract. After each bargaining session, the bargaining team will share an update and any proposals from the session.

How can YOU show your support?

We know that everyone has an impossible amount on their plate right now, so our ask is simple right now: Wear blue this coming Tuesday, January 11!

On bargaining days, we hope that all will show their support visibly by wearing union shirts and buttons. If you don’t have official union swag, wear blue! This shows our staff and our community the strength of our collective power as we support High Standards for High Tech: Protecting PBL, a qualified teacher and support for each classroom, sustainable and stable working conditions, and equitable pay for educators!
We have encountered so many challenges this school year in general and this week in particular, and we are finding hope from the united power of this collective of educators. We hope that you feel that hope, too. We are stronger together.

We can’t wait to see what Tuesday brings!

In solidarity,

Your HTEC officers

Hayden Gore, HTEC President
Roxanne Sepehri, HTEC Vice President
Sara Kennedy, HTEC Secretary
Rebecca Maldonado, HTEC Treasurer
