Dear Brookline High School Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

Tomorrow morning (Monday 1/10), I will share via BlackBoard a communication regarding Midyear Examinations and this year's Intersession Day. We are moving everything back by two days because we had no school as scheduled on Monday 1/3 and then a Snow Day on 1/10. Slowing down second quarter makes sense due to these two missed days and because more than ten percent of staff were absent for multiple days last week. Many - but not all - were COVID cases or impacted by COVID (i.e., close contacts, family members in quarantine, etc.). This change will give teachers two additional days for instruction, review, support, and the like. It also splits up midyears with a weekend. We believe students will appreciate and benefit from this shift.

Tomorrow at 115 Greenough we have Flex Block, a T-block/Advisory period focused on getting help from teachers, completing work, and generally going about the business of school. This week we also will communicate with and about students who are in danger of failing. Look for more details from Hal Mason, Assistant Head of School and Aspen X2 Lead Warrior.

As we move toward Midyear Examinations and the end of second quarter, we all need to work together - home and school - to encourage our kids to take care of themselves. They need ample sleep, good food, exercise of some sort, and disciplined habits and schedules. In my weekly message to students this afternoon I communicated the midyear decision and revised calendar and shared a number of updates and reminders. I also offered some explicit messages about taking care of themselves and others at what can be a stressful time of year. We share wonderful young people, and they sometimes need reminders not only how much we adults care about them, but also how important it is for them to care for themselves and others.

Take good care,

Anthony

SCHOOL WITHIN A SCHOOL (SWS) - Applications Open

School Within a School is an alternative, democratic community for a diverse group of approximately 120 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Goals for students include taking as much responsibility for their education as possible, sharing decision-making in running SWS, and contributing to building a caring community. For 50 years, SWS has provided students with the opportunity to participate actively as leaders in their own educations and develop meaningful relationships with teachers based on mutual respect. Admission to SWS is based on a lottery, the criteria of which are determined by the SWS Town Meeting. In addition to Town Meeting, SWS students take at least two classes in the program, including English. They take the rest of their classes in the mainstream of BHS. More information about the program and the admissions process can be found at swsbrookline.org.  Deadline for applications is February 18, 2022.

COMPOSTING AT BHS AND AT HOME

Did you know that BHS is one of the first Brookline schools to compost its cafeteria food waste? This effort diverts more than one ton each week from a polluting incinerator! Your child is composting at school, so why not do it at home too? Composting is simple and can be done in your own backyard or with a composting company such as Black Earth Compost or Bootstrap Compost, that provides EASY curbside compost pickup on the same day that your trash/recycling gets picked up. The cost to you is minimal. The benefits to our children and town - and the planet - are immense. Here's a short video on why and how to compost. Contact cmedhat@brooklinema.gov for more information about school composting and/or to volunteer occasionally to help out with BHS's composting program.

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENTS ADVISORY COUNCIL (SEPAC) NEWS

The Public Schools of Brookline has hired two external consultants to conduct a review of their Special Education programs. All Brookline parents/guardians of a child with a disability are encouraged to participate in the review process by signing up for a focus group HERE.

In an effort to maximize participation, we are offering an anonymous survey online. The survey will be open for the month of January, and your responses will be sent directly to the same consultants. If you prefer a hard copy of the survey mailed to you or are requesting translations, please email casey_ngo_miller@psbma.org or call (617)-730-2444.
