HELLO AND WELCOME to the first edition of AntennAE, a new e-bulletin to keep everyone involved with ActEarly up-to-date with all our latest news. We have fellow researchers, exploring the complexities of ant communication, to thank for its title. It was they who discovered that ants not only pick up information through their antennae but also use them to convey social signals. It was the first time antennae have been found to be a two-way communication device, rather than just a receptor. So we very much hope that as well reading our news, you will share your updates too – and contribute to our future success. Contact us

Meet the team
SAY hello to Meredith Hawking who has recently started work on ActEarly working closely with Carol Dezateux at Queen Mary University of London, contributing to the Healthy Food and Weight theme. Meredith is an NIHR Postdoctoral Research Fellow with an interdisciplinary background in social science and public health research. Her research interests include: health practices, illness narratives and moral discourses, patient experiences of, and engagement with, public health programmes, plus decision-making and communication in clinical encounters.

‘Dream and Design’
AS part of our co-production strategy development work, we ran two workshops in November 2021 (one in Bradford and the other in Tower Hamlets) which asked delegates to “dream and design” ideas to make it possible for our communities to work with us using co-productive approaches. The workshops were well-received and thoroughly engaging. We have so many ideas from them which we will include in our strategy. This artwork illustration gives an indication of the kind of discussions we heard and some ideas which will feature in our strategy.

Glasses in Classes’ new national focus
ONE of our Healthy Learning trials is to be expanded to thousands more pupils who will be given free glasses in a bid to boost literacy by tackling poor eyesight. The Department for Education (DfE) is to widen the “Glasses in Classes” scheme to reach more than 9,000 pupils in at least 225 schools in England. Piloted at 100 primary schools in Bradford, it will now be adapted for five disadvantaged areas in England under the DfE’s “Opportunity Areas” programme. Healthy Places is one of the core themes of the ActEarly programme. This video, recorded in Bradford, highlights some of the reasons why a healthy environment is crucial to health and well-being. We are proud to hear that it was also broadcast at the recent COP26 Climate adaptation event in Glasgow as part of the UKRI stand.
