Derby Recaps:
First ever Roller Derby World Cup

On December 2, 2012 derby skaters and fans from around the globe gathered in the city of Toronto, Ontario, for a historic event: The first ever Roller Derby World Cup!  Blood & Thunder, an independent roller derby magazine, hosted this epic event in which national teams from 13 countries convened to compete for a world title. The tournament, not affiliated with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), but using the standard WFTDA rules (that ARG also uses), sold out about a week in advance, and was standing room only for most bouts. Not only that, but there were thousands more who watched online--Derby News Network (www.dnn.com) reports during a peak viewing time, over 7,300 separate computers, tablets, and phones were tuned in to the action!

As predicted by many, Team USA blew the competition away: on average, they scored over 35 times the points of their opponents. However, there were more contentious games among the more closely matched teams, such as the nailbiter between 10-seed Finland and 5-seed Sweden that ended with Finland upsetting Sweden, winning by a mere 26 point margin.
Despite some uneven matches in skill and experience, it's hard to deny that this will serve as a historic landmark in the rapidly forming history of the sport. Moreover, skaters from other countries surely learned a lot about derby strategy and training over the weekend that they will be able to share with their home leagues. Assuming there's another world cup on the horizon, we bet the matches will be much closer the next time around!

Sakes take the Championship!

In Atlanta's own rags to riches underdog story, the previously 4th place Sake Tuyas had the hottest winning streak in years, rising all the way to win the 2011 Championship game against the Toxic Shocks.  They proved in cinematic fashion that nothing beats good old fashioned hard work to turn your fate around.  Sake Captain Shannihilator is looking forward to a strong repeat, "2012 is setting up to be even more competitive than 2011.  We've lost two of our main jammers to the great state of California, but we've added two new surprises to the roster that will keep everyone on their toes."  Will they remain untouched in 2012?  Only time will tell, but from all of the Atlanta Rollergirls to the 2011 Sakes, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Think you have what it takes to be an Atlanta Rollergirl?

We do too!  We're ready to mold the newest and brightest into lean, mean, derby machines.  And don't worry if you haven't been on skates since your little sister's 10th birthday party, you'd be surprised to learn how many of your Atlanta Rollergirls were in the same boat.  It's more important that you have a good attitude, a mouthguard (seriously, you have to bring a mouthguard) and some guts.

“Whip It” at Emory Psychoanalytic Institute

On December 9, a handful of Atlanta Rollergirls hit the campus of Emory University to participate in a screening of “Whip It” and discussion of women, sports and gender identity. Led by Emory PhD candidate, psychotherapist (and new derby fan) Stephanie Speanburg and hosted by Emory’s Psychoanalytic Institute, the discussion provided an opportunity for us to share all the awesomeness that is derby and use our big words. In the Q and A that followed, ARG members educated the audience on modern flat-track roller derby, the fantastic feats of female athleticism it requires, and the rewards and personal satisfactions of our favorite all-female contact sport. Don’t be surprised if you see a bunch of brain-surgeon types at our next bout.

Atlanta Derby Brats

We have seen the future of roller derby and it looks AMAZING. At the final bout of the season, Atlanta roller derby fans were treated to an exhibition scrimmage between two teams of the Atlanta Derby Brats, Atlanta's junior derby league of girls ages 7-17. Trained by ARG founder Tanya Hyde, with the assistance of L.O.R.D.S. and several Atlanta rollergirl volunteers, the Brats had prepared all summer, practicing their derby-specific skating skills, learning how to work with teammates, and perfecting their positional blocking, for their derby debut—and what a debut it was! With the crowd on its feet and the cheers so loud they threatened to drown out the announcers, the first Brats teams skated into Atlanta derby history. Next year promises to be even better. Many of the Brats have been using their off-season to train with ARG coach Jim Blair, hitting the rink every Saturday morning to work on their skating form. The Brats plan to have a full season in 2012 complete with interleague bouts, we can’t wait to see what these young athletes can do!

No Off-season for Your Atlanta Rollergirls!: DSDG prepares for 2012

With the WFTDA South Central regional tournament and an exceptionally challenging 2011 season only just behind them, Atlanta’s all-star travel team, the Dirty South Derby Girls, turned to preparations for 2012. In early November, the Atlanta Rollergirls held tryouts for positions on the team that represents the best, the toughest, the most elite derby talent in Atlanta. With new captains, Switchblade Siouxsie and Belle of the Brawl, and some awesome new recruits, DSDG is on a mission to take Atlanta derby all the way to the WFTDA Championship.  Last year the Dirty South lost a bid to advance to the championships to our long-time regional rivals, the Nashville Rollergirls. This year DSDG will be training harder, smarter, and longer to bring you the home-team wins and a top finish in the region. Watch out derby world - 2012 will be the year of the Dirty South!

Help keep an animal warm for the winter

The rumors are true, rollergirls really are big softies.  Especially when it comes to family members of the four-legged kind.  This Holiday season consider fostering a pet!  You get a friendly furry love baby for the Season, and they get a loving home while they await adoption.

If your house is already too full of kitten and puppy love this year, consider making a donation to a local shelter for food, meds, or supplies in the name of your best buddy.

Visit Angels Among Us Pet Rescue to foster a pet for the Holiday. Or make a donation of love, time or funds to The Atlanta Humane Society or Paws Atlanta

There are many, many wonderful rescue organizations in the Atlanta area, these are but a few that could use your help this year.
