Help Your League Set Priorities for Action

Individual members of the League of Women Voters around the country determine the actions we take, based on our collectively determined positions and programs of study. LWVHC Board ​values and needs your input.  Our agreed-upon ideas will be submitted to the national LWV for consideration at this summer's national convention. 
 
Join us via Zoom to briefly review the program planning process and LWVUS positions as well as the questions we need to answer for LWVUS.  We will also review "concurrences" (League lingo for "signing on in agreement")  being considered as recommended items on the agenda, including health care and digital equity.

Program: Voter Suppression
February 8, 4:00 PM via Zoom
 
Join us to explore the kinds of activities usually identified as voter suppression. Context will be provided on the justification both for and against these voting measures. The program will also explore the evidence on the effects of implementing recently adopted voting measures.
 
Presenter: Dr. Ashley Moraguez, Associate Professor in Political Science at UNCA. Dr. Moraguez's expertise lies in American politics, particularly Congress and the presidency.

We will be discussing an article by The Atlantic contribuing writer and New York Times columnist David Brooks, entitled "What Happened to American Conservatism?"

Lunch and Learn: The Road to Citizenship

Speakers are Marcella Lesher from our Immigration Team, Claudia Yepez, a naturalized citizen, and America Moreno Jimenez, a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipient. The program will promote awareness of the many  steps and challenges of applying for citizenship and the unique experiences and challenges faced by DACA recipients.
 
Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch. The public will be required to show proof of vaccination or a current negative Covid test before admission to the program.
 
Note: If necessary due to pandemic restrictions, this program will be held via Zoom. This decision will be announced 2 weeks in advance of the program.

The City of Hendersonville has been awarded $4.5 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

City Council’s vision is to use ARP dollars to fund transformative projects that address difficult community needs. Before selecting specific projects to fund, City Council wants to hear from the community to help determine priorities.

The Nominating Committee is Seeking Candidates for the LWV - Henderson County Board
 
The LWVHC Nominating Committee will be developing the slate for the 2022 elections, which will be voted on at our Annual Meeting next June. We are seeking candidates for Officers and the Board. We are particularly interested in hearing from you if you have a financial background or experience on the financial committee of a not-for-profit. We will start scheduling interviews with potential Board members and leaders this week. 

Whether you are new to the membership or a seasoned member, we encourage you to contact us if you would like to be considered. We will meet with all potential Directors and Officers, and can answer your questions at that time. Email us at  nominating@lwvhcnc.org.

 

History of Henderson County

The Blue Ridge Center for Lifelong Learning is presenting the “History of Henderson County from the 1990’s.” There will be one session on Thursday, April 28, at 10:00 a.m. - noon, in the Sink Building, Room 233, at the Blue Ridge Community College. The fee for members of Lifelong Learning is $20, and $30 for non-members. Matt Matteson, who has a background in local government, will lead the class. MountainTrue has just announced the job opening for Southern Regional Director.  You can find the job description on the mountain true website HERE
The Director is a managerial position, and the Southern Region covers Henderson, Transylvania, Polk and Rutherford counties. MountainTrue champions resilient forests, clean waters and healthy communities in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains.
