Nature News

When pondering what may come for the new year ahead, it can be helpful to review the year gone by. It’s become clear that we have entered an era of extreme weather disasters, supercharged by accelerating climate change.

Weather events, linked to a changing climate, brought misery to millions around the world in 2021. A recent study from the charity Christian Aid identified 10 extreme events that each caused more than $1.5bn of damage. The biggest financial impacts were from Hurricane Ida which hit the US in August and flooding in Europe in July. Although in many poorer regions the economic impact of climate change may not be as high, the human cost is enormous with floods and storms causing mass displacements of people and severe suffering.
2021 did see what many would consider the most important Conference of the Parties on climate change (COP 26). While still not yet enough to bring us to net-zero emissions by 2030, there were significant commitments made that undoubtedly bring us closer, if they are adhered to.
Climate has finally forced its way into mainstream political consciousness and 2021 has seen some environmental victories that do bring hope. The question is, will enough be done to make a difference? Only time will tell.

Pet Market Growth
Another fact is that the global pandemic is now entering its third year and is still very much a reality. Despite or perhaps as a result of the stress and unusual health precautions that we all experienced in 2020, people are focusing more than ever on their pets.
For the first time, pet industry sales exceeded $100 billion, according to American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2020 State of the Industry Report. The trend of pet ownership is booming, with many people finding comfort and companionship in having an animal companion while staying at home.
This tidal wave of spending is expected to continue for the near future, with Morgan Stanley forecasting that pet industry spending will nearly triple to $275 billion by 2030. A recent AlphaWise survey reported that almost two-thirds of 18-to-34-year-olds plan to get a pet in the next five years, driving a 14% increase in pet ownership.
It's clear that "pet parents" are increasingly concerned about the health of their pets and that they're willing to spend money to maximize the health and wellbeing of their furry friends. Natural products are also on the rise. First, it was food, as large numbers of owners started putting organic, natural products in their pet’s dish. Now we are seeing dramatic growth in demand for natural options across a wide range of pet product categories, including health care. And as environmental awareness and a desire for a more natural approach to healthcare continues to grow, is your company poised to grow with it?

A Natural Floss-ophy
Did you know that February is National Pet Dental Health Month? So, we’re planning ahead and bracing ourselves to share a little wisdom-tooth!
While it’s a great floss-ophy to have a month dedicated to our pets’ teeth, dental health should be a daily ritual for pet owners. Just like us, our pet’s teeth are prone to disease and decay and taking good care of them can add 2-4 years to their lives. While regular pet tooth care may sound like an arduous task, it’s actually not as difficult as you might think with some products and it makes good business sense to encourage your customers to make tooth care a priority.
With HomeoPet pet dental care has never been easier, as our Doggy Dental and Feline Purr Dental offer a really easy way to help keep our pet’s teeth in excellent shape. These natural, homeopathic medicines aid in the removal of plaque and tartar, while also supporting healthy teeth, gums and breath. Contact us today to find out more and to discuss how our Dental medicines could help your customers pets.

Betty White Challenge
The world lost a shining star on New Year's Eve, when television icon and passionate animal lover Betty White passed away, less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. Now, social media users are spreading the #BettyWhiteChallenge, which encourages people to donate to animal shelters in White's honor. We’ll be making an additional donation to one of the animal sanctuaries that we work with on a regular basis on the 17th of January - Betty’s birthday. Will you join us and donate to your local sanctuary to help animals in need?

Natural Businesses We Like

This month we love Eco-Pup clothing. They say that 'there's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing' and as we skid headlong into a cold and wintry January, the same applies for our four-legged family members. But have you ever thought about the environmental impact of your dog's favourite coat? Eco-Pup has. Made with love of bamboo, organic cotton, Repreve recycled, eco-friendly, upcycled and natural materials, Eco-Pup dog clothing products are designed and made in BC, Canada and will keep your pet warm and cosy, while helping to protect the natural world that we all share.

HomeoPet – Natural Pet Care For 27 Years
Tom Farrington MRCVS., MVB., VetMFHom - recognized many years ago the increasing demand for alternative natural treatments for common conditions that, while not life-threatening, cause suffering in animals. Previous ways of treating such conditions were with expensive and often harmful drugs that had significant unwanted side effects. In 1990 Tom enrolled his brother Daniel to see if there might be a market for a safe, naturally based therapy for animals. After several years of research, in 1994 Tom's vast knowledge of animal health, veterinary medicine, homeopathy and natural pet care became available outside his clinic, when his brother Daniel founded HomeoPet and launched a range of natural medicines for animals. We have been helping pet owners and animal lovers around the world find a more natural route to pet health ever since.
