Coronavirus in the New Forest
England has moved back to the Plan A response to coronavirus. Coronavirus cases nationally and locally remain high. In the New Forest area the week before last, there were 743 cases per 100,000 people which was slightly up on the week before.

There are actions you can take to help reduce the spread and protect yourself and others. To help stop the virus from spreading, you can continue to:

  • wash your hands regularly
  • get vaccinated Click HERE  and get your booster dose Click HERE
  • wear a face covering . Face coverings are no longer legally required in any indoor setting, and it is your choice when and if to wear one. Please respect other people’s decisions to wear or not wear a face covering.
  • stay at home and get a PCR test if you have any symptoms Click HERE
  • encourage air flow by opening a window for 10 minutes every hour if you’re meeting indoors with people you don’t live with
  • take a LFD test before meeting up with friends or family Click HERE

In the New Forest:

  • 91% of people aged 12 and over have had their first coronavirus vaccine
  • 86% have had their second vaccine dose
  • 75% have had a booster or third dose

If you are yet to have your first, second or booster vaccination, you can book an appointment by calling 119 or using the online booking system Click HERE You can also get your vaccination by visiting a walk-in centre Click HERE More walk-in centres are becoming available locally each week.

Information on significant planning and developments

The NFDC is responsible for planning permission for new properties, and changes to existing properties, in the New Forest district. A recent reader survey indicated that one of the topics people would be interested to read more about was significant planning applications and developments. There is now a new section on the NFDC website, called ‘strategic sites progress’ where you can find details on how developments are progressing - Click HERE
The information the NFDC publishes on those webpages is intended as a guide to give you updates on our strategic sites. These strategic sites come from the ‘Local Plan’, a key document for planning and development. As part of meeting our housing needs, the Local Plan identified 18 Strategic Site Allocations, capable of accommodating 100 or more homes. For each of the sites, you can find:

  • name of the site
  • location map
  • a target for the number of homes to be provided
  • latest progress, such as status of planning applications and what works have been completed

Time to get walking again!

At this time of year we start to think about the mud drying up and getting out to walk in the beautiful English Countryside again, but where to find new and interesting walks?

Walking in Hampshire
https://www.walkinginengland.co.uk/hants has hundreds of walks to download and print, free, it also has books of walks, details of all the walking groups in the county and much more. Whether you want to walk on your own or with a group all the information is there in one place.

John Harris (the custodian of the website) said ‘There is so much walking information on the web but it is difficult to find. Walking in Hampshire  (part of the Walking in England website) has brought it together in one place so whether you are walking from home, or away on holiday, you will be able to find a walk suitable for you’.

With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy. So home or away, check out the websites and get walking!

Do you burn wood in your home?

It’s important to stay warm and well. But wood burning can cause harmful indoor and outdoor particulate air pollution. Professor Sir Stephen Holgate at Southampton General Hospital explains why this is a leading cause of ill-health “These miniscule particles, invisible to the naked eye, are small enough to pass through the lungs, into the bloodstream and into your organs. This can contribute to diseases such as asthma, coronary heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and COPD. One of the main sources of particulate air pollution is wood smoke.

I would encourage anyone who is considering burning wood – either for home heating or on a bonfire – to think very carefully about what they are burning. In fact, choosing to stop burning wood (and other solid fuels) is one of the best ways of improving local air quality and protecting your health.”

The Environment Centre, a local, independent environmental charity, offers free, impartial and easy-to-understand advice on wood burning, health impacts of air pollution, and affordable warmth. Click HERE for more information

The Environment Centre also run an advice line for residents struggling to stay warm or pay energy bills. Call 0800 804 8601.

Deer Accident Flow Chart

After a recent spate of deer accidents we thought it would be helpful to remind you of what to do when you come across or are involved with a deer incident in the forest . Click HERE to see how to proceed in such a situation.

Are you a wishcycler?

If you sometimes add items to your clear recycling sack in the hope that they are recyclable, you may be a wishcycler.  Wanting to recycle more and help the planet is the first step, but it’s important to understand how recycling and waste should be disposed of locally. Otherwise, with the best intentions, you may be causing waste contamination.  Waste contamination occurs when the wrong items are mixed in with recycling. This can result in recyclable materials being spoilt and unsuitable for recycling. Find out more Click HERE

In the clear recycling sacks we collect from your household, you can add :
Aerosols
Cans
Tins
Plastic bottles
Paper
Cardboard

Glass bottles and jars can be added to your black glass box or communal glass bin. Check which items are not suitable for glass recycling collections Click HERE

Items which most commonly get disposed of incorrectly in the district include:

  • Takeaway boxes, such as pizza boxes which are often greasy, meaning we can’t recycle them.
  • Disposable coffee cups .You may be able to take them to a coffee chain or local business for recycling
  • Textiles, such as clothing and shoes cannot be added to your clear recycling sack, but many community recycling banks, tips, and businesses provide banks where textiles can be reused or recycled: Click HERE
  • Soft plastics, such as crisp packets, bread bags and film
Soft plastics can be recycled at some stores. To find your nearest Click HERE
  • Plastic packaging - Pots, tubs, and trays cannot be recycled in the New Forest. Please add these items to your black waste sack. All plastic bottles, including plastic lids can be added to your clear recycling sack. Please attach lids to bottles to ensure they don’t get lost in the recycling process.
  • Shredded paper can be composted at home, or make good packing material if you are moving house or posting something. We cannot recycle shredded paper as the material is too small to be sorted in the recycling process, and can also be a fire hazard.
  • Polystyrene cannot be recycled in the district and should be added to your black waste sack.

Many items not suitable for our household recycling and rubbish collections can be taken to the tip, known as Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Please remember to book your slot before you visit Click HERE

2022 Highway Code changes

The updated Highway Code came into effect on 29 January 2022.The Highway Code revisions include a new Hierarchy of Road Users, which implies automatic culpability for drivers in accidents with more vulnerable road users (cyclists or pedestrians). These significant revisions of the Code include that you :

  • Should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which their vehicle is turning.

  • Should not cut across cyclists or horse riders going ahead when turning into or out of a junction or changing direction or lane, to prevent “left hook” collisions.

  • Should open car doors using the “Dutch reach” method, with the hand on the opposite side to the door they are opening. This makes drivers turn their heads to look over their shoulders and reduces the likelihood of “dooring” a passing cyclist.

  • Should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport said the "changes to the Highway Code will improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders "
