BE-STEMM 2022

The Faculty of Arts & Science is a proud sponsor of BE-STEMM 2022, the first annual national conference for Black Excellence in STEM & Medicine (STEMM). Join the Canadian Black Scientists Network January 30–February 2, 2022, for a four-day virtual program featuring outstanding research, career and recruitment opportunities, and facilitated connections across sectors. Early bird registration closes January 15, 2022.

Save the Date: Minds Redefined Conference

This year’s Minds Redefined Conference will explore themes of resilience, well-being, and how we can cultivate spaces that de-stigmatize mental illness, prioritize well-being, and encourage help-seeking. The keynote speakers are Humble the Poet and Steven Page.

Reminder: 2022–23 Research Opportunities Program

The application deadline for the 2022–23 Research Opportunities Program (ROP) is January 17, 2022. ROP offers A&S faculty the chance to engage second- and third-year undergraduate students in their research projects. Eligible faculty receive funding to support the cost of hosting student research projects. Contact: rop.artsci@utoronto.ca.

Reminder: Summer 2022 Research Excursions Program

The application deadline for the 2022 Research Excursions Program (REP) is January 17, 2022. REPs provide faculty members with funding to involve third-year undergraduate students on a faculty-led research project that takes place off-campus during the Summer term. Faculty members receive $1,500 in research support funding, and are provided support with arranging logistical bookings and meeting safety abroad requirements. School of Cities Knowledge Cafe

Join the School of Cities’ Knowledge Cafe session, Training and Education for Climate Resilience, where Professor Karen Smith will share the work being done to develop training resources for graduate education in climate change impact assessment.

Teaching & Learning Winter 2022 Community of Practice Series

The Teaching & Learning (T&L) Community of Practice showcases innovative teaching across the Faculty of Arts & Science. The Winter Series, beginning January 28, 2022, will feature a wide variety of speakers addressing topics ranging from calls to action, psychology of student success, role-playing and English science communication. Answering the Call: Wecheehetowin — Reporting on Our Commitments

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII) is asking all U of T units and divisions to provide information on Indigenous research, teaching and learning initiatives undertaken in 2021 for OII's Annual Report. This may include:

  • Indigenous events and other initiatives;
  • New Indigenous hires;
  • New curriculum and/or co-curricular educational program developments;
  • Indigenous research;
  • Community partnerships;
  • Relevant divisional policies.

Deadline: January 31, 2022

Reminder: Call for Applications — OLA Fellowship

The Faculty of Arts & Science has established the Online Learning Academy Fellowship. This one-year Fellowship will provide faculty with the opportunity to design or redevelop an online or hybrid course. Each Fellow will receive funding and support from the Online Learning Academy to realize their digital learning course design project. Completed projects will provide inspiration and models for other faculty through various means of showcasing their work to the broader Arts & Science community. XSeed Interdivisional Research Funding Program

A&S faculty are encouraged to apply to the XSeed program designed to promote multi-disciplinary research and catalyze new innovative partnerships between faculty in A&S and the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Funding is available for four new collaborative projects ($60,000/year for two years, starting September 2022). A&S contact: Glaucia Lima.

Updated Guidelines: COVID-19 & In-Person Research Activities (On- and Off-Campus)

For the most up to date information about institutional changes to research operations, all A&S faculty members should read CPAD Memo #42 and review the January 5, 2022 announcement from Professor Lorraine Ferris, Associate Vice-President, Research Oversight and Compliance.

Advancing EDI in Processes and Practices

Embedding a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in divisional practices and processes is critically important. Faculty are encouraged to take advantage of the work of the Toronto Initiative for Diversity and Excellence (TIDE) at one of their upcoming sessions, Unconscious Bias 101 and Unconscious Bias 102.

Invitation to Open Consultation Sessions

The Co-Chairs of the Review of the Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment invite all members of the University community to attend open consultation sessions to provide feedback on the Policy. Separate virtual sessions for students, faculty, librarians and staff are available to ensure there is an opportunity for everyone to share their unique perspectives and experiences. Session details and registration information can be found on the consultation website.

  • All U of T community members who are required on campus must complete UCheck before arriving to provide proof of vaccination and COVID-19 self-assessments.
