New Leadership Roles Announced

Marlyse Baptista, Uriel Weinreich Collegiate Professor of Linguistics, has been named Associate Chair of the department and Director of Graduate Studies. Andries Coetzee Receives NWU Alumni Excellence Award

Professor Andries Coetzee was recently recognized by the North-West University (NWU), South Africa, with an Alumni Excellence Award. At the biennial Alumni Excellence Awards ceremony, Coetzee was recognized, alongside eight other distinguished alumni, for his contributions to linguistic research, and for the promotion of Africa and Afrikaans on the international scene. New Research Examines the Impact of Zoom Calls on the Brain and Speech

Julie Boland, professor of psychology and linguistics, is lead author on the study ‘Zoom disrupts the rhythm of conversation.’ Findings appear in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. Read the Michigan News article

Welcome!

Please join us in welcoming the following people to the department:

Douglas Merchant (PhD, University of Georgia) joins the department this semester as a new lecturer, after holding lecturer positions at UCLA and San Diego State University.

Hayley Heaton (PhD, University of Michigan), is returning to our department as a part-time lecturer this term, in parallel to her work as Assessment Specialist at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching.

Cynthia Yoonjeong Lee joins the department as postdoctoral fellow. Cynthia is working on her National Science Foundation grant, primarily in Los Angeles, with various upcoming trips to Ann Arbor.

Ruaridh Purse joins the department as postdoctoral fellow in the Phonetics and Phonology Lab, and from May onward also working with Pam Beddor.

Jeonghwa Cho Gives Talk at University of Cambridge

Jeonghwa Cho gave a talk at the University of Cambridge as part of the Cambridge Processing and Acquisition of Language Lab (CamPAL group talks) series on November 22. Her talk was titled "Grammatical Morpheme Priming in Visual Word Recognition: Across and Within Languages." Read more

Danielle Burgess and Justin Craft Present Research at Graduate Student Colloquium

Danielle Burgess and Justin Craft presented their research in December at the department's Fall 2021 graduate student colloquium. Danielle presented "Investigating the NegFirst Bias in Learning and Communication." Justin presented "The Effect of Listener Experience and Social Expectation on Illusory Percepts." Read more

Tamarae Hildebrandt

Graduate student Tamarae Hildebrandt grew up in the historic community of Faribault, Minnesota, with her parents and twin brother. She attended nearby Carleton College as an undergraduate, earning her B.A. degree in German and Linguistics in 2013. Find out how Tamarae's linguistics journey has evolved from language acquisition to include syntax, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics.

What is African American Language, and Why Don’t You Already Know?

African American Language (AAL) has been derided as ‘nonstandard’ by those in power for hundreds of years. Often labeled as “slang,” “ghetto,” or with other derogatory terms, AAL is rather a dialect of English — and some scholars would go further to argue that it is an independent language. What’s up with these different claims? White America and white American authority dismisses AAL as an “improper” offspring of Mainstream US Standard English (MUSE), rooted in AAL users’ ignorance of or failure to adhere to the standard. What is the truth?
