Watch: The War on Vaping Closes a Shop in East Harlem

Spike Babaian is the Swiss Army Knife of vaping. She is a fierce advocate for tobacco harm reduction, a vape business owner who has helped hundreds if not thousands of smokers to quit, a published researcher, an educator and an activist against flavor bans. At her store in East Harlem, a predominantly low-income Latinx and Black neighborhood, she helped people with some of the highest rates of smoking switch. “We quit smoking and we thought everyone should have that chance, and the government took it away.” “Even though there isn’t a lot of money in East Harlem, there are a lot of smokers,” Babaian told me [...]

Secondhand nicotine vaping at home may increase risk of bronchitic symptoms in young adults

If these findings prove causal, there would be a "compelling rationale" for banning the use of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices in public spaces, conclude the researchers. Despite the popularity of vaping, little is currently known about the possible health effects of secondhand exposure to nicotine vapor from e-cigarettes and other vaping devices, say the researchers. And while secondhand exposure to particulate matter from e-cigarettes is lower than that from conventional cigarettes, levels of ultrafine particles in e-cigarette aerosol can be higher. This aerosol also contains volatile compounds and metals known to harm lung tissue.

Heated tobacco products for smoking cessation and reducing smoking prevalence

Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are designed to heat tobacco to a high enough temperature to release aerosol, without burning it or producing smoke. They differ from e‐cigarettes because they heat tobacco leaf/sheet rather than a liquid. Companies who make HTPs claim they produce fewer harmful chemicals than conventional cigarettes. Some people report stopping smoking cigarettes entirely by switching to using HTPs, so clinicians need to know whether they are effective for this purpose and relatively safe. Also, to regulate HTPs appropriately, policymakers should understand their impact on health and on cigarette smoking prevalence.

expert reaction to study looking at second hand nicotine vaping in the home and respiratory symptoms in young adults

Prof Lion Shahab, Professor of Health Psychology [...] “This paper reports on the potential impact of secondhand nicotine vape exposure in young adults on respiratory symptoms. After controlling for various potential confounders such as young adult’s own use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes or cannabis as well as secondhand exposure to cigarette or cannabis smoke, young adults who were exposed to secondhand nicotine vaping were more likely to report respiratory symptoms than those who were not. While this finding is worrying and deserves further investigation, the results should be seen in context of the limitations of this study. [...]

Smoking electronic cigarettes can be harmful to dental health: Dentist

Smoking electronic cigarettes, or vaping, can cause a decline in oral and dental health, a dental health practitioner, Drg Amalia Rahmaniar Indrati, cautioned. "Nowadays, e-cigarettes, or vaping, has become a lifestyle, but bear in mind that vaping can have an impact on health," Indrati said here on Tuesday. Indrati, a dental health practitioner at the Banjarnegara Islamic Hospital, said some research indicated that smoking electronic cigarettes had negative impacts on lung, dental, and oral health. According to the dentist, oral disorders caused by smoking e-cigarettes, or vaping, may include gum infections, dry mouth, cavities, and yellow teeth.
