It’s already been quite the January, hasn’t it? Well, before we get into all of today’s headlines, let’s start your week off strong with some mouthwatering food news. As shown by The Everout’s first edition of food news for 2022, Seattle’s food scene has already hit the ground running this year! Here are some highlights:

🍰A former Hot Cakes director of operations and a London Plane alum recently opened Bake Shop in Queen Anne. This fresh spot opened at the end of 2021 and serves  pastries, sandwiches, salads, drinks and more, all with a strong focus on reducing waste. 

🍎 Eat Local, a business specializing in serving frozen meals from foods grown, caught, raised and made in Washington, will soon be closing all of its storefronts. The local biz is transitioning strictly to e-commerce and distributing its products in grocery stores. All retail employees have been assigned to other positions in the company.

🍦 The ice cream shop Salt and Straw has five new seasonal flavors you won’t want to miss, including Coconut Cream Pie with Lemon Curd and Chocolate Hazelnut Cupcake. You can satisfy your sweet tooth at the popular chain’s Ballard, Capitol Hill or Kirkland locations.

What Seattle is talking about 

❄️This past weekend’s snow caused all four main mountain passes to close. Snoqualmie reopened Sunday evening, but Stevens Pass and others are still being cleared. It can be hard to know what roads will close and how you should prepare for the drive, but thanks to the following list of traffic and weather cameras, WSDOT Twitter accounts, and more, you’ll know where to look before hitting the road. ➡️ (Seattle Met)

📖  David Wagoner was a key figure in shaping our region’s poetic history. The professor, poet, playwright, and author who passed away shortly before Christmas last year at age 95is one of the Northwest’s many literary legends. Wagoner encouraged his readers to nourish an appreciation for our region's roots and the natural world. 🐥  Birdwatching, folk dancing, fireworks — what doesn’t Washington have to offer?! This list of Washington festivals from the Seattle Met will take you on day trips across the state for all sorts of fun activities. If you’re still uneasy about indoor gatherings, don't fret — there are plenty of outdoor offerings in the roundup including wandering through ice sculptures in Lake Chelan or birdwatching walks near Port Townsend. 🚗Set your sights on domestic travel. We all know how quickly the weather and the pandemic can change our travel plans, so the Seattle PI has put together a list of closer-to-home domestic trips you can take once it’s safer to travel. Suggestions include discovering the culinary and art scene of Puerto Rico, taking in sun-kissed sunsets and white sand beaches of the Alabama Gulf Coast and much more. ❤️ Local veteran Tom Kasza is using his expertise to provide support in the wake of the United States’ troubled evacuation from Afghanistan. Kasza spent more than eight years in Army Special Forces and is now reaching out to the connections he made while serving in Afghanistan to help people get out of the country. He’s created a nonprofit called “Save Team 11” which aims to support his teammates, in Afghanistan who are being hunted by the Taliban. The group’s mission is to provide food, medicine, clothing, shelter, and other necessary survival supplies while they wait for their documents to be processed. (KUOW)

One more thing….

King County Metro is running fewer trips than normal because of staffing shortages. The public transit authority will be operating more than 90 percent of the normally scheduled service, but routes 177, 304, 320, and 330 will not run on weekdays, and route 125 will stop runing on Saturdays now through Jan. 21.

If you’re planning on taking the bus this week, be sure to check out King County Metro’s trip planning tools so you can get where you need to go without waiting an hour for a bus that might not be coming.
