Call for Abstracts - First annual Statewide Research Symposium on Biomedical Science and Engineering, Fall 2022

The first annual Statewide Research Symposium on Biomedical Science and Engineering is planned for Oct. 13–14, sponsored by the University of Maine, University of New England, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, Jackson Laboratory, Roux Institute, Northern Light Health and MaineHealth.  

The symposium, to be held at the University of New England Innovation Hall in Portland, will highlight the diverse, state-of-the-art work in Maine’s public and private academic institutions, healthcare systems and private industries as it relates to biological and physiological disciplines, medicine, biomedical engineering and data science. 

The program will include plenary sessions with keynote speakers, poster sessions and breakout sessions on selected topics.

The Epidemic of Elder Isolation and Loneliness Accompanying COVID-19

Clifford Milo Singer, MD, DFAPA, AGSF, Chief of Geriatric Mental Health and Neuropsychiatry at Acadia Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center

This seminar will consider the unprecedented negative impacts that COVID-19 has had on older adult well-being especially from social, psychological, and behavioral perspectives. Special emphasis will be placed on resultant increases in the risk of older adults experiencing social isolation and loneliness during the pandemic as well as other conditions that have served to further threaten elder health, safety, and quality of life. Strategies for preventing and even reversing the potentially lethal consequences of older adults living isolated and lonely lives will be considered.

The 30th Annual Maine Geriatrics Conference provides a venue for health practitioners, social service providers, and others with interests in the field of aging to come together to share ideas, ask questions, and develop or support care strategies affecting older adults in all care settings. This is our task and our mission. We are dedicated to ensuring that all conference sessions will enlighten, inspire, and honor the abilities of our conference attendees. By the end of the conference, you will be better prepared to advance ideas and systems that address older adult health disparities and optimize aging.

Join us for a casual “learn and connect” BioME Virtual Coffee Hour: Innovation & Insights on February 9th from 10-11am. Hear from Maine life science entrepreneurs, medical device manufacturers, digital health startup and academia to learn about some of the new and innovative technologies being developed in Maine and the collaborations formed to create them.

February's Coffee Hour will feature David Eagleson (The Baker Company), Samir Haydar, DO, MPH (MaineHealth), Caitlin Howell, PhD (University of Maine), and Justin Hafner (KinoTek). Presentations will be followed by Q&A and the audience will have a chance to connect with the speakers and each other.

The Maine IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is a collaborative network of Maine educational and research institutions led by the MDI Biological Laboratory and sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Join James Coffman, Ph.D., MDIBL Associate Professor and Director of Maine INBRE, INBRE project leaders Lori Banks, Ph.D. and Jennifer Honeycutt, Ph.D., and Bates' Senior, Maddie Feldmeier, online February 14 as they discuss the multi-faceted effects of INBRE across students, mentors, core facilities, and Maine’s workforce. This event is free and open to the public, but requires pre-registration.

UMaine News: $1.5M award launches WellNurse to address resiliency, reduce burnout 

January 24, 2022 

Increasing resiliency and reducing burnout among University of Maine School of Nursing students, faculty and staff will be the focus of WellNurse, a new initiative made possible by a $1.5 million award from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration to support and advance health and public safety workforce resiliency training.

WellNurse will be a research and interprofessional program in collaboration with the UMaine School of Food and Agriculture, Clinical Psychology Program and New Balance Student Recreation Center. It will serve UMaine’s School of Nursing, which welcomed its largest first-year class of 115 students in fall 2021, and ultimately will be a model for health professional programs throughout the University of Maine System and beyond.
