2021 FUNDRAISING APPEAL CONCLUDES SUCCESSFULLY

We are thrilled to report that we raised $26,117 during our end-of-year appeal, an increase of 31% over last year. We also added 29 new supporters in this period.

Your generous gifts will enable us to install a SPARC computer lab (Solar Powered Access to Raspberry Computing) at the Nanenane Secondary School in Tanzania this spring.

BREAKING NEWS: Nanenane is now fully funded, thanks to the individual supporters listed below who responded to this appeal. We applaud you!

SOITSAMBU FULLY FUNDED AND READY TO BE INSTALLED

As we reported in our last newsletter, funding has been completed for a SPARC+ installation in the SoitSambu Secondary School in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro District. We expected installation to occur in December, but it was delayed due to supply chain issues in procuring Raspberry Pi computers.
Our ever-resourceful Tanzanian team found a suitable substitute in the Raspberry Pi 400, a computer built into a keyboard (pictured). Installation is now scheduled for January.

ALPHABET SOUP! – LUNCH WITH PPI, SFF, and PEF

(l-r) Mr. Sabasaba Moshingi, Janice Lathen, Andy Bryant

On October 13th, our Founder and President, Janice Lathen met for lunch with Andy Bryant, Executive Director of PPI’s longtime and generous supporter, Segal Family Foundation (SFF) and Mr. Sabasaba Moshingi, Treasurer of PPI’s partner organization in Tanzania, the Potential Enhancement Foundation (PEF). Mr. Moshingi is CEO of Tanzania Commercial Bank. The purpose of the luncheon was to introduce Mr. Moshingi and Andy to each other. The trio discussed collaborative efforts and future plans for PEF. While in the U.S., Mr. Moshingi met virtually with PPI’s board of directors.

Also in October, Janice attended SFF’s virtual annual meeting.

IN TANZANIA…

In Dar es Salaam, Mr. Moshingi hosted a meeting to discuss PEF operations, leadership, and human resources. Pictured with Mr. Moshingi (r) are Dr. Mteule Nkomo and Mr. Walter Minja, respectively, business executives and longstanding supporters of Powering Potential.

A TRIP TO ZANZIBAR

In our last newsletter, we reported on a trip that our PEF colleagues took from mainland Tanzania to the archipelago of Zanzibar, in order to repair and replace Pi-oneer computer equipment. The excursion was a success and you can read all about it on our blog.

JANICE LATHEN HONORED BY HEROS EVERYWHERE

On November 11th, Powering Potential’s Founder, Janice Lathen was honored by the organization Heroes Everywhere as a hero who makes this world a better place every day. In this YouTube video, Janice shared what drives her to accomplish all that she has with PPI. (Interview starts at 14.50.)

CELEBRATING 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF TANGANYIKA’S INDEPENDENCE

On Dec. 7, Janice Lathen attended a celebratory event at the Tanzanian Mission to the UN to observe the 60th anniversary of the independence of Tanganyika. Tanganyika gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. In 1964, Tanganyika united with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Later that year, the country was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania.

Janice was pleased to connect with old friends at the reception. In the past, Janice was honored to meet two previous Tanzanian ambassadors to the UN. The current ambassador, His Excellency Professor Kennedy G. Gastorn, was traveling on the day of this reception and Janice was invited to meet him at a later date.

PERU CHALLENGED BY COVID-19

The impact of Covid-19 on Peru is severe, as illustrated in this post from NPR. Our project in Iquitos has been on hold. PPI’s Regional Director for Latin America, Dana Rensi, is monitoring the situation and she plans to return to Peru in March for one month, to resume teacher training. Dana’s odyssey at the beginning of the pandemic was covered in our April 2020 blog post.

BABSON COLLEGE FRATERNITY FUNDRAISER FOR POWERING POTENTIAL

Outgoing PPI board member Janisa Anandamohan coordinated a fall fundraiser with Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity at Babson College in Massachusetts to benefit PPI.  We are grateful to the fraternity’s members and friends who donated to our cause.

Perhaps you would like to lead a fundraiser of your own. A good place to start would be a birthday fundraiser on your personal Facebook page with this link. Or maybe you have another idea. In other words, get creative!
Powering Potential warmly thanks the generous contributors to our Nanenane fundraising appeal:
