 - BioBlitz - Photo Comp - Bat Walk - Autumn gardening - Climate change and gardens - Big Garden Birdwatch

Dear Subscribers,

Wild about Bath has been very active through the autumn. One of our aims has been to build a community of local people who love nature and want to care for it locally. We've spread the word to several other groups in the neighbourhood and our Facebook page has nearly 200 members and lots of inspiring posts of local wildlife. We now have an Instagram page too.

What's been happening

Autumn events ranged from a Bioblitz in a local garden where we found over 100 species, through a bat walk in Monkton Combe, to our first annual photo competition for your wildlife snaps from lockdown.  A title for this coming year's competition will be announced in March 2022.

In the big wide world outside of Bath, COP 26 happened and we described some of the effects climate change will be having on our gardens. See the next newsletter for some actions we can take on our own patch to help mitigate the impact.

Upcoming Events

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch - it's for kids and adults too

It involves watching your garden for just one hour over the weekend of 28th -30th January. Follow this link to obtain the necessary info ahead of time. The RSPB can provide resources for knowing which birds you have. We have an article on the website to help you know how to help birds in the winter - they need to know there will be a reliable source of food in any feeders you have, so make sure they are set up now!

Bioblitzes
The Garden Bioblitz was so successful that we will hold some more in 2022. It involves some specialists in certain areas, like small mammals, bumblebees, plants, amphibians and reptiles showing those who don't feel so knowledgeable what can be found in a short period of time in an ordinary local garden.

Associated Organisations

Bathscape is doing a fantastic job of helping landowners all around the Bath area look after their property in a way that enhances the landscape and biodiversity. They also run the September walking festival and various other events and have volunteer days if you would like to join in local conservation activities.

Have a wonderful holiday time! Our next newsletter will be out early in 2022.
