"Will you give back to support the GAP?"

"On the Great Allegheny Passage, you all travel past my 11-acre plot of land in Whitsett, Pennsylvania, where migrants and immigrants – men like my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather – once proudly labored in mines owned by the Pittsburgh Coal Company.  I have a love affair with this piece of land.  Men died here. People suffered.  I believe it is sacred ground.

"Today, it's home to The Ruins Project, where I'm helping artists create mosaic on imperfect brick and concrete walls, to tell the story of this part of the world.  The Ruins Project makes a direct connection between those who are gone and those who are still here.  It’s beautiful. I hope you’ll sign up for a tour.

"I love watching you ride by, along this path stitched together from railroad rights-of-way, gas lines, and byways, and built by people who come from coal.  You have a love affair with the Great Allegheny Passage.  It's beautiful.

"Will you give back to support the GAP?  It's free to travel but expensive to maintain.  It’s threatened by annual mudslides yet dependent on volunteer labor. Travelers like you count on wayfinding signage, updated maps, and enhanced amenities.  Please, honor what’s been built, and what you enjoy, mile by mile!

Sincerely,

Rachel Sager
