1 QZMS 2021 Annual Report Stats

Every year, it's always exciting to see how our scholars and alumnae are doing, hear about their achievements, and learn about their QZMS experience. This also gives us a chance to connect feedback and better help our scholars in the future. Below are some of the highlights from our annual survey.

As one of our overarching goals is for our alumnae to reach financial independence and become economic multipliers, it’s great to see that most of our alumnae make more than RMB 6000/month as full-time employees, considering the average income for fresh grads in China is around RMB 6000. Three of our alumnae even make more than RMB 16,000/month.

In addition, more than 20 percent of our scholars and alumnae are helping others financially (including their parents, siblings, grandparents and friends).
QZMS highly encourages scholars to explore their career and life internationally. We're proud that we started to have scholars go and explore all over the world. Currently, we have scholars and alumnae studying in Mainland China, Hong Kong/Taiwan, Europe and North America.
QZMS experience from our scholars/alumnae:

"Meeting more great people has been most valuable to me. And I always encourage my students through my experience.” – HE Xiaobing

"During the critical period, I broadened my horizons and realized more possibilities.” –WANG Nana

"I was told that I can still fulfill my dream of studying abroad even though I am not from a rich family. I was encouraged to apply for an exchange year in Germany, which was a life-changing experience for me. I finally decided to come back to Germany to continue my graduate study, and will pursue a PhD afterwards.” – ZHANG Yani

"Vision and courage. Broaden your horizons and dare to set greater goals. Have the courage to change myself.” – LI Ping

"It not only gives me financial support, but also gives me the international vision which I can't touch before.” – WANG Qian
2 Warm Message from Our Board Chair Nick

It's been another great year for QZMS!  Although we had to forego our in-person personal development workshop for the 2nd straight year, we were able to schedule more speakers, continue our public speaking class, and run our first-ever book club for the scholars.  For this, I have to thank our awesome board members for all of their hard work, dedication, and fun!  It's been a great pleasure to work with you all, even though we've had to do it from afar for over two years now!

Equally importantly, we also recruited our 11th class of scholars, which ended up being such a large class because of the many qualified and capable scholars.  This wouldn't have been possible without all of the generous donations over the past 10+ years that have enabled us to be a full year ahead of our fundraising needs, so that we were able to sponsor all of the qualified scholars.  Thank you so much to our donors for your continued support!

It's also important to note that, as has always been the case, our whole organization is completely volunteer-based; all donations go exclusively to paying for scholarships and in-person event programming.  A HUGE part of the value of QZMS comes from the mentorship provided by our professional and alumnae/senior scholar mentors.  Thank you to our community of volunteers, without whom, our program wouldn't be anywhere near as effective at changing our scholars' lives.

Lastly, thank you to our scholars.  Your continued passion, drive, and success inevitably warms my heart and provides me a great deal of hope in a world that seems to try really hard to snuff it out.

Here's to a hopeful 2022 of continued progress, bridging communities, and breaking glass ceilings for our impressive scholars!

3 Welcome New Scholars & Fundraising

We're delighted to announce that we have accepted 10 awesome new scholars to join our QZMS family this year. Normally, we admit eight scholars annually. However, many applicants this year are highly competent and qualified, and we finally decided to sponsor two more scholars and help them achieve their goals in STEM fields and personal development.
We'd like to express a warm welcome to our 11th batch of QZMS scholars! Also, a big shoutout to our board member Pedro for leading the recruitment process, and our numerous volunteer mentors & scholars/alumnae for their efforts and help in the interview process.
  • Mentors: Chao Zhang, Vivian Law, Peng Zhang, Daphne Choong, Omair Azam, Pablo Che Leon, Janice Kwan
  • Scholars/Alumnae: BAI Wenlu, ZHANG Yani, FENG Yanxia, BAI Linling, LI Ping, SHU Jia, JIANG Yan, WANG Qian
At the same time, we’re still in the process of hitting our fundraising goal of USD 25K , in order to sponsor about 20 scholars next year. Your donation and support would be very much appreciated.

4 Mentor's Corner: Dalton Victor

I have had the privilege of being involved with QZMS since 2015 as a Board Member, Mentor and Sponsor.  Getting to know the Mentees has always been a highlight of this wonderful program and I have been lucky that my work travel has allowed me to meet many in person.  When I was working for Intel I would occasionally stop by Beijing on my way to Malaysia.  My current job at Google has brought me to factories in Chongqing and Shenzhen for weeks at a time.

Dinner in Beijing, Jan 2019

Yihui Chen asked me to write about running multiple programs simultaneously as I currently lead 5+ Programs as a Senior Technical Program Manager at Google which will yield revenue for the company of several  billion dollars over the next few years.  Each separate team has between 10 and 50 active core members who are supported by hundreds of other cross-functional team mates.  The best way for me to keep contributing at a high level is to gain the trust of my teams, such that I can delegate a lot of tasks to others on my program teams or to other cross-functional teams.  I prioritize tasks for the team by considering dependencies such as schedule, budget, other programs needs and teammates’ bandwidth. We then work together to make sure that we have the right strategy for success while maintaining a strong sense of team and work-life balance for our teammates.

My belief is that these same rules of team work, delegation, prioritization, trust and empathy help us in home life with friends and family as well.  Those principles can help us achieve happiness through work-life balance.  I truly hope that no Mentee or other folks in the QZMS family ever needs to feel alone in their efforts.  Particularly in this time of a global pandemic, I stand here happy to help others in any way possible and look forward to hearing from old QZMS friends as well as relishing making new ones!
5 QZMS's First Book Club

Our first book club in QZMS history held this fall was a glorious success. The book we discussed is Dale Carnegie's book "How To Make Friends And Influence People''. It was a two-session bookclub. We asked our scholars to experiment at least one tip from the book after our first session in October, and we talked about their results & reflections during our second session in early December.

We chatted about topics that included fundamental techniques to create meaningful relationships with people, whether personal or at work; ways to make people trust and believe in you; how to positively influence people; and how to be a great leader without being offensive or arousing resentment.

Thank you all to our board members and scholars for your active participation and amazing contribution! We really enjoyed listening to your opinions & stories and learned a lot, and we are looking forward to many more successful book club sessions in the near future.
Here are what our scholars said about our bookclub:

“I feel so lucky to attend this book club! I really got a lot! The examples in this book are usually thought-provoking, and my biggest take-away is Trying to avoid putting the other in the defensive mode,  and the most interesting one is Remembering one’s name can easily make him/her feel important.

The book also made me realize that to build a long-term relationship is just like playing Lego, because if we don’t consciously control the direction and order, we cannot get the expecting results. When communicating online, my favorite part is Where do you think this book can improve, making me realize that sometimes the classic books could also be inadequate, so I should exert critical thinking frequently. Oh and I also got a tactic from Yin to keep friendship alive! Recording labels and keywords for them! Sounds easy and gonna work for certain!

This is really a very meaningful and enjoyable experience. I want to thank the board for everything you have done, thanks, we appreciate it. Reading with discussion is much more interesting than reading by myself! I’m really looking forward to the next book club!” -- SHU Jia

"We shared our biggest takeaway of the book, our doubts of dealing with people in daily life as well as our changes after reading this book. As I shared, it seems awkward to say something like" I love you" and "Thank you"  to family members, so I hardly do that. I was surprised that many other scholars and mentors felt or once felt the same way with me! Then we shared our own stories, experiences and the way of expressing our feelings. I had a great time and it helped me a lot!

The homework from Yin, like giving others compliments, writing down 3 things about every person I met in a month and telling feelings to others instead of blaming or saying nothing, I have to say, is the most interesting homework  I've ever done! I had so much fun doing this homework and it helped me make a deeper connection with my friends and family! I'm so glad I joined the book club, and so looking forward to the next time” -- LI Jia

6 Speaker Session by our Alumna WANG Qian

This December, we had our final speaker event of 2021, and QZMS's 31st in history, and the first one by an alumna WANG Qian 王倩. She presented on the "Xia Dynasty -- Throne passes from sages to relatives".

We're happy to share how this presentation was created: Earlier this year, WANG Qian 王倩 prepared this presentation as part of her monthly call with her mentor Janice, who was so impressed and delighted that she suggested we bring it to the whole QZMS community.

Thank you so much Qian for doing such an amazing Chinese cultural presentation to us! Here are the notes and recording (password: nva5), in case you missed this great presentation.
Message to our scholars: If you have a topic you'd like to share more about and to practice your English presentation skills in front of a VERY friendly audience, we encourage you to email us and we'll like it up for 2022!
7 QZMS in the Wild

We always encourage our QZMS family members (mentors, scholars and alumnae) to meet in person all over the world whenever they live close or happen to be in the same city:)

During the global pandemic, we understand it’s harder to make this happen. Here, we're excited that Yin and Pedro managed to meet in NYC when Yin was on a business trip early this Fall.

Again, thank you so much for your support for our QZMS community for this past year, and we'll have more to update this coming new year!  Stay in touch:)
