NEW BEGINNINGS 2022

Tiny Houses at Village, photo by Chere Mah

We envision 2022 bringing exciting new beginnings in the restoration and regeneration of a healthy environment and social justice landscape. Our January Art + Activism Jan. 23 will feature artist Sally Hindman who founded Youth Spirit Artworks. With the help of community and youth YSA has created a Tiny House Village providing shelter and new beginnings for homeless youth.

Sunday Jan. 9  from 2-4 WEAD celebrates the closing of Art on the Edge: From Extraction to Restoration and Regeneration, at The Peninsula Art Museum.

We look forward to collaborating with WEAD members who would like to organize exhibitions and events in regions beyond the SF Bay Area.

In 2022, WEAD plans to rebuild and refresh the web platform for our critical artists directory and archive.
We send great appreciation and gratitude to our creative WEAD members and community.

WEAD honors bell hooks and Mary Beth Edelson, who passed away in 2021. bell hooks' committed writing on gender and race helped push feminism beyond its white, middle-class worldview to include the voices of women of color and working-class women. Mary Beth Edelson’s work in the 1970s  raised early awareness for the feminist movement.

SALLY HINDMAN: ART SAVES LIVES
Art as a Vehicle for Youth Healing and Transformation

Sunday January 23, 2022
5-6:30 pm Pacific time

Artist, homeless activist, and Quaker, Sally Hindman will describe her journey starting Youth Spirit Artworks in Berkeley, CA in 2007. Art is the centering focus of all of the YSA projects, using art as a vehicle for healing and transformation.YSA provides job training for low income and at-risk youth 16-25 in the Bay Area, using art as the vocational medium.

In 2016, youth initiated a community organizing campaign to build tiny houses for homeless youth. 26 colorful, youth-designed houses have been built in a Tiny House Village in east Oakland. One goal is to inspire sustainable community living practices (gardening, diet, recycling) in the midst of structures which themselves model sustainable materials –the Maker space is “sip” construction, the Welcome Center/Store & Artisan Space is constructed of straw bales with earth plaster, and a container module building project is under way. The state of the art shower/toilet trailer recycles shower greywater for toilet flushing.

The entire space is vibrant with energy and potential, and is intended to cultivate beneficial habits and life skills that will help the youth move on to permanent living situations.
