Happy New Year Data Strategy Pro!  Bring on 2022!!

In this newsletter, we're going to be celebrating the many Data Strategists who passed the CDMP last month, discussing the release of two new products and an article, outlining what's to come in the month of January, sharing book recommendations from December, and wrapping things up with some advice about how to incorporate gratitude into your new year.

But first, some interesting Data Strategy news out of Australia last month.  The Australian government intends to fuel a transition to a more data-driven society and complete a data modernization initiative by 2030.

This new strategy focuses on maximizing data value, modernizing Australian society, and promoting data accuracy for both the government and private sector. This initiative includes the expansion of the country's Consumer Data Right that permits the public access to their personal information. The government is also reviewing the Privacy Act and setting up the data.gov.au website as a “one-stop-shop” for access to government data.

Stuart Robert, the minister responsible for digital transformation, stated, "The Data Strategy is part of our commitment to deliver better services to all Australians, and it will power our national ambition to become a modern, data-driven society by 2030."  The plan runs through 2025, at which time a review will be conducted to see what changes should be made in the lead up to 2030.  You can read more about the Australian Data Strategy here.

Final Thoughts

Closing out with some good news / bad news on the science of gratitude and how it can radically shape your year ahead.

The difference in how we respond to events and challenges in our lives matters for our happiness and health.  When we have a more optimistic mindset, we're better able to deal with stress while maintaining a sense of overall wellbeing

Good news!!  Research has shown that it's possible to cultivate a more optimistic mindset.  One way to do this is through the practice of gratitude.

This can be achieved by 1) appreciating our current circumstances and past achievements and 2) distancing ourselves from any tendency to compare our situation to what could have been or what someone else has going on.

Gratitude is deceptively simple.  Developing a gratitude practice requires only the effort of identifying, each day or every few days, a handful of objects, experiences, and individuals that we appreciate.

This exercise alone has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, strengthen the immune system, and promote deeper sleep.

To amplify the effects of experiencing gratitude, keep your notes in a journal.  Also consider writing thank you notes or emails to people who have supported you.

Bad news:  the New Year will bring new challenges.  And not all of them will look like the kinds of stock photos we at Data Strategy Pros are so fond of peppering our articles with.  Some of the challenges you'll be faced with will probably really suck.

But dwelling in the negative is a choice.  Instead, you can cultivate gratitude through simple appreciation for what you do have.  This will help you weather bad times.

Bottom line:  just like you can learn best practices of Data Strategy, you can learn to be optimistic by practicing gratitude.  At Data Strategy Professionals, we are so grateful to you for being a part of this community.  Thank you for giving us this space in your inbox every few weeks.

While personal motivation is key to attaining your goals, the impact of a supportive group cannot be overstated.

Data Strategy is a crucial discipline that spans end-to-end management of the data lifecycle.  Given that what we choose to measure and evaluate is a reflection of our values, Data Strategy Professionals offers a thoughtful forum for conversation about these critical topics.

We also offer training for Data Strategists and Data Scientists.  Your ambitions are within your reach!
