Committee Updates

The Research Committee has been working on advocating for the implementation of M-SIGHT into medical school curricula. M-SIGHT is a multi-modal educational module that involves online learning, medical documentation, and patient-based simulation to thoroughly teach medical students how to identify possible risk factors of trafficking and the resources to which they should refer victims/patients at risk of being trafficked. We have been working to coordinate with the founders of HEAL Trafficking, who were involved in the authorship of the M-Sight project, to discuss this further! The current chair of the committee is Minka Gil and the assistant co-chair is Imaima Casubhoy.

Prior Research Projects:

  • The Impact of Human Trafficking Training on Health Professionals’ Knowledge and Attitudes was published in April/May in the Journal of Medical Education & Curricular Development (Sarah Hofer, Emily Anderson, Sahar Caravan, Dr. Geynisman)
  • Jennifer Talbot is working on a national Surrey of US Medical Schools regarding human trafficking curriculum.
  • A manuscript that assess training of surgical residents regarding human trafficking is being finalized by Sneha Aidasani
  • The Physician Resilience project is in the statistical analysis stage. Researchers are working on developing and honing the manuscript with the target journal being the JAMA network open.
The Education Committee is working to create educational videos on labor trafficking. If you are interested in participating in video production please email rachel.anderson@umassmed.edu to get involved.

The Student Interest Group is also looking for a new Public Relations subcommittee leader. If you are interested in this role or seeking to join any of the other above committees, please email racheligeiser@gmail.com.

Student Spotlight

The January Student Spotlight highlights Jessica Poirier.

Jessica Poirier is a Canadian IMG with a passion for primary care, global and women's health. Growing up between Gabon, Ethiopia, Canada and with medical training in Dominica, Jessica fell in love with medicine and the way it raises awareness on social determinants of health. She joined AMWA PATH with the purpose of learning more about, and sharing, how physicians can be trained to detect and fight human trafficking. Her quarantine hobby has been formatting and rearranging photos which she puts to good use with Canva to create infographics for AMWA PATH.

Leadership

At this time AMWA-PATH is recruiting volunteer LIFT coordinators

Duties: 3.5 hour commitment per LIFT event (day of communications, panelists check in, running the zoom platform during the LIFT training, as well as assisting facilitator/lecturer with time management and monitoring chat/Q&A)

AMWA Membership

AMWA-PATH is an initiative of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA), and encourages its members to support our initiative by becoming a member of AMWA! There are countless opportunities for leadership and involvement in initiatives on gender equity, women's health, and public health issues like the opioid epidemic and gun violence.  Students and residents are able to join for a one-time fee that lasts the entirety of medical school or residency, and is accompanied by valuable member discounts for board prep, scrubs and white coats, legal triage, and merchants that more than pay for your membership. Use the special discount code PATH to get 15% off first-time membership here.

Campaigns

The AMWA Gift Campaign is an opportunity for you to gift an AMWA physician membership to a friend, colleague, or mentor. This is our way of thanking you for your valued membership. You or the nominated individual may submit information at bit.ly/amwagift between now and the end of the year.

The Traveling Stethoscope FUNdraiser is a peer-to-peer campaign that allows you to raise funds for initiatives within AMWA that you are most passionate about. Whether you are active in a branch or a committee or committed to our overall mission, we encourage you to participate in this holiday fundraiser at bit.ly/fundamwa.
